System Monitor - Adding support for additional events

It is mentioned on the page for System Monitor that is was written modularly so that support for additional events could be easily added. I also see that nothing has been updated since 2011. Are there any APIs that would allow for others to add features? I'm very interested in updating this and adding support for notifications when system default playback devices change.
