The help page stops short of saying how to register apps because there really is nothing else you (as the user) need to do. Applications *do* register themselves automatically - usually they try to register with Growl when they are launched so if Growl is running and you launch Handbrake (and Handbrake’s settings are set to use Growl), it should register itself. Some of the other apps (like Pidgin and Outlook) require a plug-in to add Growl functionality, and you can find links to the plugins and information about how to install/configure them on the Apps page here: http://www.growlforwindows.com/gfw/apps.aspx. Although some apps natively support Growl and some require a plug-in, in both cases, you cant register them manually.

 

Growl does automatically check for updates each time it is launched and once every 24 hours if it is left running that long. When a new version is available, Growl will alert you and ask if you want to install the update. If you want to check manually, right-click on the Growl icon in the system tray and choose ‘Check for updates’. If no updates are available, it will confirm that you are running the latest version.

 

The current version of Growl is listed right at the top of the main Growl for Windows page in bold letters: “Latest Version: Growl for Windows v2.0.9”. It actually used have the exact text “Current Version: x.y.x” right under the big green “Download Growl” button but I took it out at one point since it repeated the same information that was right next to it. I may add it back just to be extra clear though.

I've got Growl for Windows installed (some time ago), and finally decided to see what it takes to run it.  Running the program, it is non-obvious as to how to get other programs "registered," so I went ahead to the "help" function, which takes me to the Growl for Windows help web page.

Going through the page, I see at one point the "application" tab shown with the "no applications have registered yet" message, just like I currently have.  "This must be the place to look," I think.  But the only information I find it "Applications must register to send notifications with Growl and once registered, they will appear in the left pane."

But how?  You've left off the part which explains how to do it?  The "no applications have registered yet" should have a link or a button or a tool which provides a means of doing this "registration," and the help page should actually explain what this process is and how it is done.  Doing a search for "register" on the page turns up six instances of the word, but none of them seem to explain how to do this.  I already have some of the software installed which I believe should work with Growl (Pidgin, Outlook, Handbrake, Windows Media Player), but they don't show up in Growl, so this isn't as simple as "automatic."

On another note... the program might benefit from an "check for updates" feature.  In addition, some way to determine what the current version of Growl is on the Growl website without the user having to download the program (perhaps a version history or just a notation of the current version number under the "Download Growl" button or a "Current version x.y.z" on the top of the banner or something).

Lastly, I would have preferred to send this feedback directly to the developer, not post it to everyone.  If there is a way of doing that, I didn't see it.
