to growl for windows
the best way to figure out what is going on when Growl doesnt appear
to be working as intended is to enable some logging and see what it
outputs. by default, logging is disabled and since it is more of a
developer-oriented setting, there is no UI to turn it on. if you want
to enable logging, here are the steps:

1. make sure Growl is closed completely and not running
2. go to your %LOCALAPPDATA% folder (ex: C:\Documents and Settings
\brian\Local Settings\Application Data\Growl\2.0.0.0 on XP)
3. open the user.config file
4. find the section for EnableLogging and change the value from False
to True
5. save the file and restart Growl

now GFW will write to the 'Log' folder in that same location. you can
see the full requests it receives, the full responses it sends, and
some additional information about how the notifications were handled
(which display was used, which computers it was forwarded to, etc).
you can also see any error responses, which are most handy when trying
to debug something.
