Prompted by recent discussions, I’ve decided to flesh out a thought I had a little while back (https://groups.google.com/group/growldiscuss/browse_thread/thread/125970d8bfc061b1/b54fd64f75a8155d?#b54fd64f75a8155d) regarding including a short set of ‘welcome messages’ the first time growl is run.

While in principle I agree with the current WI-Framework’s user choice approach, I also empathise with the Dropbox ideal of a very simple install process. I can also see that for some apps that require a notification system to be useful (imagine installing GrowlTunes without having Growl installed, or something), giving the user an option to not install something that is basically an essential component is probably undesirable!
I have always considered most of the ire expressed on the growldiscuss forums to be more the result of a lack of being informed about Growl, rather than an explicit wish to have been asked about it being included in the first place. I think that something like this might help.

Anyway, I have made some quick mock-ups of the sort of thing i was thinking. Bear in mind the sort of experience you get when you first run quicksilver (http://github.com/tiennou/blacktree-alchemy/); that sort of thing:

1.tiff
2.tiff
3.tiff
4.tiff

I like the idea of a 'welcome to growl' wizard in general; I think that the most basic customizations, as presented in your mockups, are ones that people would appreciate being stepped through but might otherwise not see.

I'm nervous about installing Growl Extras from this setting... especially GrowlMail, as lowering the bar to installation is only going to flood us further with folks who aren't prepared to understand what happens with each OS X update.
