Glen,
Sorry to here of your losses.

We're had a very good insurance experience with Auto Owners Insurance. I highly recommend them. They have covered hail damage here, when all of our neighbor's suffering the same damage were denied a claim by other companies. They even covered supplies that were in the field, in use, like plastic mulch and row covers. I showed them the damage in one field and gave them on paper how many feet of materials and cost and they didn't ask to see the damage in the rest of the fields. Covered greenhouse damage and even transplants lost. We do have the greenhouses covered, but all the other supplies and the transplants were considered tools and supplies, which we have covered in a general way. This was the third claim we've had with them, the other two were wind damage and tool theft and it was always a quick, and easy process.

Dear All,

So our 2 hoophouses sustained damage last night, the plastic  blew off and is torn beyond repair, and a little structural damage on one. Both need endwall repair. It’s a bummer in that we have a lot of spinach planted in these and we are expecting freezing tonight.
In May 2008, we also had one hoop pretty much destroyed by high winds and our business personal property coverage paid for the repair (after much haggling with the insurance company).
Our insurance agent says that if we make 2 claims in 3 years that the company may drop our property coverage, or up our premiums, or cut out the hoops from our coverage, but whatever happens it will not stay the same. Is it worth it to put in a claim for $1500-$2000? We are looking into that.

So before we decide whether to put in a claim, I would like to ask any hoophouse people out there …

1 - Do you have insurance coverage on your hoops, and what has been your experience with this?

2 - And, anyone have any special insights into how we can protect our spinach tonight? We will of course cover it with whatever we have but there may be other ideas. We expect that it will be back above freezing by Friday or Saturday through next week and give us time to put up new plastic.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated. I imagine that others in MN and WI experienced similar things last night with their hoops.

Sincerely
Glen
