We met for our initial training a couple of weeks ago. We were very
honored to have a some folks willing to step forward as mentors and
begin the training. More people are becoming interested in this
comprehensive community program. More are seeing the health benefits
and looking to understand how they might become involved.
It has been our intention to focus on serving both the local elders
and the youth among us......as well as helping them to serve one
another...creating a circle of giving. Notwithstanding, we find that
our "mentee" numbers continue to be considerably higher than the older
adults who are able to mentor.
At our most recent GGH Board Meeting, the Board of Directors
considered the fact that there have been adults, under the age of 50,
who have expressed interest in becoming mentors. Although the focus
of GGH will continue to be intergenerational mentoring, there was a
unanimous decision by our directors to amend the bylaws to allow
younger adults to apply for mentor positions; which will be decided
upon by the board on a case by case basis, assuming they are able to
pass a Live Scan (fingerprint/background check).
Regarding the Live Scan: Mentors and volunteers who will be working
with youth, must pick up a Live Scan Request form. The top half of
the form will be filled out and returned to Russ Carmick from
Brisbane's Park and Recreation Department. Once the form is
processed, applicants will schedule their Live Scan Appointment. The
cost of this service is $66. We understand that not all applicants
will be able to afford this fee. If an applicant cannot pay the fee,
Growing Green Hands, Inc., will cover the fee upon request.
Mentor Applications are being accepted as training continues.
We hope more will join us for the next training and nature connection
on:
Sunday, March 21st, 2:00-4:00pm at the Community Center.
Any level participant or interested volunteer is welcome to attend,
the training is free.
Participants should be prepared for the meeting to begin and end
promptly.
Materials will be provided and Refreshments will be served.
Please call me if you have any questions.
