Have you heard about or felt the Avatar blues? Although the movie
Avatar is on track to be the highest grossing film of all time, some
viewers say it leaves them depressed. Could the depression be a
result of feelings that “Pandora” is intangible? On the fan forum
site "Avatar Forums," a topic thread entitled "Ways to cope with the
depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible, " has received
more than 1,000 posts from people experiencing depression and fans
trying to help them cope. The topic became so popular last month that
forum administrator Philippe Baghdassarian had to create a second
thread so people could continue to post their confused feelings about
the movie. "I wasn't depressed myself. In fact the movie made me
happy," Baghdassarian said. "But I can understand why it made people
depressed. The movie was so beautiful and it showed something we don't
have here on Earth. I think people saw we could be living in a
completely different world and that caused them to be depressed."

Growing Green Hands (GGH), a new program co-sponsored by the City of
Brisbane, and Executive Director, Tamberly Mott, want to help. The
truth of the matter, this program can help. Why? How?

Growing Green Hands is far more than an ordinary mentoring program.
This program is designed to promote education, counseling, and healing
with nature. Tapping into “Sensory Science,” GGH will teach everyone
NSTP-Natural Systems Thinking Process. This process has been shown to
create human connectedness, happiness, balance, peace of mind, as well
as producing the unique synergy between humanity and the earth that
the movie Avatar so richly pictures for us. As the story goes… on the
fictional planet Pandora, a naturally balanced and beautiful paradise
flourishes because it is rooted in mutually-beneficial nurturing and
healing connections between its citizenry, the Na'vi, and nature. To
our loss, what Avatar omits, as do most media and leaders, is that
Pandora's seemingly miraculous process for living in a happy and
sustainable paradise is readily available now, in real life on Planet
Earth via NSTP.

Reaping the wisdom from the older “life-experienced” mentor, in most
intergenerational mentoring programs is often not enough to sustain
the mentor-mentee relationship. Typical mentor programs depend on
the mentor to create relatable moments and individually support the
mentee with experiences that s/he generates; the mentor gives and the
mentee receives. However, GGH’s reciprocal –nature relationship
program supports this delicate relationship with small- and large-
group activities and is intended to increase personal, social, and
environmental well-being for all who participate. Teaching and
sharing NSTP-Natural Systems Thinking Process is just one way Growing
Green Hands will accomplish it’s mission. To find out more, please
plan on attending an Orientation Seminar on January 31st from 2 to 4pm
@ the Community Center.

BTW--We have large numbers of students hoping to be matched with
mentors in June, but only a small handful of willing adults have come
forward. We can and will bring “mentors” from South San Francisco and
Daly City if we cannot meet the need with mentors from Brisbane, but I
do hope Brisbane will step up to this need….for the youth….for their
own well-being….and for the well-being of our community.

GGH will not ask more of you than you can give….but we do need you.
Please consider attending the orientation to learn more. Or call or
email me to schedule a special group or individual orientation.
