I would like to be able to see the most recent new members for my group, but the only way I seem to be able to do this in the new format is to export the member list and use excel filters...

Am I missing something?

Unfortunately no.  The new format is missing a number of very helpful moderator tools that were available under the old system.  Whom ever designed this went by statistics or marketing data and likely never managed an active group that needed such tools.  And part of this is their attempt to homogenize Groups into Google+.  I moved my stuff here from Yahoo but am now considering going back or going private.  Its a shame really since I liked the old format.  It had all the right tools a moderator needed, and they were easy to locate.

When I add someone to my group I usually place them on moderated status for a while to make sure they are not a junk mailer and in order to do that now I have to write down the user name and then find them to change the user settings, and like you if I want to know more info I need to export the list and use MS Excel or Open Office Calc.  The "FIND USER" search screen is missing stuff as well.  It would make sense to locate new members by date or range of dates.  The search screen does nothing for me now.

I have over 600 users and getting the whole list to display is another chore but at least then i can use the web browser's FIND feature to locate something.  Thankfully I have a Windows 8 system since my old XP box could not get the system to display all users what so ever.  I cannot begin to think what the poor person with thousands of users or an older computer has to do.  They are likely into Excel as well by now.

What bugs me is that none of the columns sort on screen.  That would resolve your problem and many other's problems.  Whether that is a feature that is coming is unknown and no one really answers here from the development team.  In fact the whole Groups forum where Q&A took place for the old format disappeared and I cannot find an equivalent.  This area seems to be it.
