This all a part of their trying to integrate Groups with Google +. I
think they are trying to make Groups a "circle of friends" kind of
thing, but not all Groups are a social networking atmosphere.
Further, Google + is still limited to individual persons.
Organizations or other business-like groups that have mailing lists
and discussion services are not allowed to participate in "+" and
attempting to access and set up + with a profile name that appears to
their pattern recognition system as a company or organization is
disallowed. So in order for your group to work with "+" you need to
register it as "Bill" or "Fred" and not "My discussion Groups Name" or
"My company's name."
Your ability to take a snapshot of your group's mailing list is also
gone in the new format by the way, so I'd revert to the old format and
get a copy now and take one periodically in the event that feature is
canned. It will be necessary to have if you need to migrate to a new
system elsewhere.
I'm already considering going private and will be ready to go in the
event that they do not resolve the moderator tool problems.
The broader problem to all of this is a lack of a groups support forum
- there is none. The former Google Groups support blog/forum was
closed and archived a couple of years back. None of the present
Google products support forums include Groups.
I have to speculate if this is a sign in the sky to consider.
