Marlis' backyard offers a peaceful sanctuary for the local wild deer herd. There's a lot of clover to nibble, and the herd loves to hang out. Usually only young bucks are allowed to hang out with the herd when the fawns are young, but in August an injured two year old buck was given some leeway. We are not naive about hunters, but most deer in our area are lost to mountain lions and coyotes. Because members of the herd usually hang out in the yard several times every day for some hours, we get to know some of the deer quite well. Over the years, we've quickly noticed when one is missing. We've seen a number of injured deer who have escaped a dangerous encounter, but their wounds usually look like the result of teeth or claws. Since we are not hunters, this experience was a shock . . .
