Admittedlywe never dug the original Alien Hominid. First released on consoles in 2004, it had its fanbase, sure, but the Newgrounds art style, slack animation response, and aggravating rather than enjoyable difficulty curve just turned us off.
Alien Hominid Invasion's setup won't appeal to everyone. We were disappointed to find the mission objectives recycle far too often, and their random nature seems to rob the stages of any real individuality. But in terms of its handling, execution, and additions, Invasion feels much superior to the original. And, while ultimately repetitive, its chaos is fun for brief single and multiplayer arrangements, and we enjoyed dipping in for a quick bout of raucousness.

I love The Behemoth and their games a lot so I'm very excited to get this eventually. I still have my copy of the original for Gamecube so I might sell my copy and get the HD bundle because the Gamecube version is selling for decently high right now lol
@ButterCashier Using "we" is a common journalistic device to convey a team effort, or to express the viewpoint of a publication, or to maintain journalistic objectivity (so that a journalist can avoid inserting themselves into an article).
Additionally, while it admittedly is a bit crude by today's standards, I think that the original game's art still holds up. It's still snappily animated, has a clearly defined style, and has a charming look that does bring to mind a bygone era of the internet where Flash dominated. Bringing that up as a negative is bizarre to me.
I agree that the AH Invasion's art style looks objectively better, but dismissing the charm of the original visuals as just the "Newgrounds art style" immediately turned me off from reading the rest of the review. I think that's a gross oversimplification of both what Newgrounds truly represents and of the many, many artists who still post to NG every single day.
I too would like a physical copy of this and alien hominid hd but who knows when or if that would happen. Just look at how long it took to get castle crashers physically. I may just get invasion for now and if they ever bring both out physical, I may pick that up.
As a couple of you pointed out, it's a format of the site's style guide. You won't find anyone writing "I" on any of the site's articles because in the event one did (as I once did when starting out) it will be corrected to "we" by the editor. If it helps, whenever you see a "we", it will be the opinion of the author unless multiple authors exist on an article.
It's an opinion thing really. You think it holds up well, visually, but I could never stand it and still find it ugly. I agree 'Newgrounds style' is a bit blanket, but in a mini-review limited to 500 words a lot of concessions are made (and a lot of post draft cuts) and sometimes a simplistic exaggeration helps to paint a picture or make a point more quickly.
@MH4
Not at all! I'm happy to hear feedback of any kind, so no problem whatsoever. Every author has their own style and goes with what they think fits. Sometimes you might find a bit of 'negligent overgeneralisation' occurring in mini-reviews, particularly. I think my main goal here would have been, does the line:
Illustrate succinctly and clearly enough to the majority of readers what it is that I didn't appreciate about the former game? I have to be satisfied with it and move on at some point, else I could tinker with it all day against a pressing deadline!
It looks like they fixed the frame rate for this game in this release! Back when this came out I was so disappointed at how choppy it looked and played. Cool that they brought both Castle Crashers and this up to a normal old frame rate from decades ago, lol. I'm going to have to get this and see what I think of it!
I'm actually disappointed that they moved away from linear level-based gameplay for Invasion, but certainly will give it a shot at some point. I'm also really bummed that once again The Behemoth has left PlayStation players in the cold - we aren't getting either HD or Invasion.
@FineLerv Castle crashers definitely could use a sequel. And it needs to shake up the gameplay so it doesn't devolve into jump + light attack, light attack, light attack, light attack, light attack, light attack, light attack........
Very weird Alien Hominid gets a sequel, but when asked about a new Castle Crashers they said something along the lines of: 'we did all that they could do with the first game'. Wonder if this does well alongside the return to form of Beat 'Em Ups if they'd be willing to reconsider.
Local co-op with a friend can make the player breeze through levels and excel in fan-favorite minigames. This includes the Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) game, where players progress through simplistic platform levels that keep them wanting to play the hundreds of bite-sized levels.
The game takes place 19 years after the events of the original. When the alien from the first game gets shot down by bumbling FBI agents in 2002, their species immediately retaliates and prepares for the invasion of Earth. However, it takes them 19 years to get to Earth which provides a comedic turn, acknowledging the gap between the new game and the original.
The new aspects are a dive-and-roll button that lets the player evade enemies and bullets, and allows the alien to dig into the ground to briefly move to give the player breathing room. The mechanics of the feature are different from the first game, as the diving is much more intuitive, giving players the edge in battle. Even the floaty controls after shooting toward the ground make the gameplay feel fast-paced and keeps players on their toes.
The weapon variety has been expanded, from alien blasters and laser guns, to shotguns. The wide range of weapons spice up the gameplay, making players want to try out all of them. The new mutation button starts off as a grenade, but now allows for new unlockable mutations such as enabling a deflective shield, adding a fiery dash or calling in an alien ally to help take care of the pesky FBI agents.
This gives the right amount of challenge, and while it may be overwhelming at times, tools like the dig and dodging give players ample time to think and react to enemies. Those looking for a harder challenge can play the permadeath mode, seeing how long they can last against the onslaught of the FBI.
The graphics are a tad bleaker than the original, which falls in line with the enemies who are now bulked up with armor, shadow agents with night vision goggles, and an assortment of robots and drones all out to stop the invasion of Earth.
Alien Hominid Invasion starts out promising enough, at least. I love The Behemoth's quirky cutscenes and weird, goofy music. The demo begins with an alien invasion, set 16 years after the first attack (Alien Hominid came out in 2004, after all). Then, we're met with a brief tutorial that goes over the controls before thrusting us into the action. In Alien Hominid Invasion, your little alien starts out armed with a blaster than can charge for a more powerful attack; he can also do a dodge dash, burrow into the ground and leap out on top of enemies, throw grenades, and jump higher by shooting at the ground. That's all there is in terms of movement and maneuvers. Admittedly, Alien Hominid Invasion feels smooth and controls well.
Players can choose their path of destruction on a grid-like map, all the way up to an enemy HQ. Different sections of the city you're invading have different effects, so if you want to buy new items, you can just weave your way to a shop. Other areas have "enemy swarms" or armored enemies; some, like the shops, might be more beneficial and give you more loot or currency. I don't mind the mechanic of choosing your path to the enemy headquarters, because going from one level to another doesn't feel as linear as a straight path to the finish.
The real problem I have is with the combat. When you land on an area and attack, there's a few objectives you need to complete. Every level requires you gain intel, which is all done by killing enemies. This is just so mindless. With the blaster, you'll repetitively tap the shoot button so much that it actually makes your finger tired. Enemies are also so pitifully weak that there's no impact to combat. Once you gain enough intel and upload it, you'll have another objective to complete. This might be killing purple-colored enemies or chasing a few robots around. Then, you collect more intel, and do another objective. It's the same thing over and over again for every level.
The objectives are the meat of the gameplay, but they feel so uninspired. There were only a few different objective variants, so you'll probably encounter these time and time again. After a half-hour demo, I felt like I saw all that Alien Hominid Invasion had to offer. That half hour was pretty uneventful, too. I truly hope that there will be a more varied selection of objectives upon release. Jumping around a 2D stage with meaningless platforming and flat gameplay doesn't help. I did not have a chance to play cooperative since there's no one around to do so, but even with friends, I find it hard to believe it'll increase my enjoyment when the core mechanics aren't substantive.
At the very least, I enjoy cosmetics and gear in my games, and Alien Hominid Invasion provides some of that. It appears that you'll level up and get crates which have new loot. Likewise, you can buy them from hideouts, which are shops. Loot includes new heads, weapons, and boosts. Heads change your appearance, and from what I've seen, these are really unique and funny. It's something I've come to expect from The Behemoth. One gave me a propeller nose and wings on the side of the head, which also had an effect allowing my alien to double jump. Others add percent modifiers like increased health. If they're just stat increases, it's not very exciting. I'd much prefer to have more heads that add new abilities like the double jump.
