Hi Anne, Jeremy and Fabian -Anne, thank you kindly for this informative and very exciting background. We're looking forward to your wicked presentation on this wicked problem! The work you've all chosen to embark on with your bright minds and big hearts is challenging and very necessary. We're enthused to discuss and explore ways to put our collective minds and efforts together.I'll advise by end of next week as to who will be joining from my side. Will likely comprise the extended Giva team - from Y&R's Chief Creative officer and other creatives involved in Giva - to our NPO partners from Dare to Share, Blikkiesdorp4Hope and the SurfShack (really cool youth from townships empowerment via surfing) who are all involved with youth outreach and empowerment.I'm thinking we'll move the venue to Y&R (Young & Rubicam advertising agency's offices). Afterwards we'll have snacks and beers/wine for continued chatting n' conversing.Let's earmark 3 to 5pm.Let's meet before the 23rd to polish final details and logistics. More importantly I wanna structure a session after your presentation that'ainteractive, discussion based, and somewhat workshop-ish. There will be a whole bunch of creative minds in the room. Let's engage themin something constructive and incite their contribution with specific ideas/feedback/etc.Chat soon and happy women's day!Gilp.s. we completed the Giva pilot to huge success. We raised and dispersed R30,000 in just two weeks via the mobile platform.30 Givas gave directly to 40 individual needs posted by our 3 NPO partners. Giva's a go and gaining momentum. On Aug 6, 2013, at 3:48 PM, Anne Pao wrote:Hi Gil,Great glad the timing will work out on the 23rd and that we will have a diverse group of players at the meeting.I've cc'd in Fabian and Jeremy so they are also in the loop. Here is a bit about who we are, the project, why we chose to focus on Street Kids, and what the aim of our presentation was.Our team is comprised of 6 students (Anne Pao, Fabian Kauer, Jeremy Flax, Nicholas Pilz, Warren Gething, Dylan Van Byle velt) who are part of the full-time MBA programme at the University of Cape Town, Graduate School of Business. We each come from different professional backgrounds, from the private and public sector of healthcare, digital marketing, international business development, engineering, accounting and finance. For one of our core classes, Innovation & Entrepreneurship, our professor challenged each group with a Wicked Problem project. For this project, each team was asked to:1) Identify a Wicked Problem (a social problem that because of its complexity and potential for interdependencies does not have a simple solution)2) Research this problem with academic literature3) Come up with two opposing models or solutions4) Engage in the identification of a new or better solution to this problem through a rigorous, iterative process. In choosing our topic, we considered a range of problems from incentive structures to improvement of healthcare delivery systems to street children. Street children stood out clearly as the choice as it was a problem that resonated with each of the group members because of the personal connection we felt with the problem, considering how tangible and present it is here in Cape Town. Each of us felt personally impacted by wanting to make a positive difference when it came to the plight of street children, but not knowing how to do so in a sustainable and impactful way.
Deliverables for the project included a 25 page research paper on our topic, approach and solution and then a final presentation to our class. Our research paper covered sub-topics grounded in research literature around: Root cause analysis, NGO and non-profit roles and challenges, two opposing models tackling street children and homelessness (we interviewed organisations working on the problem of street children, and also children on the street so that we could ensure we had their perspective as a core part of our project), and finally our solution, which was a combination of the two models already on the ground but with additional new, identifiable features that we believed would amplify the impact of the current efforts. Our presentation will take you through some of the work that we did for our project, and will hopefully provide a look at the two different approaches to managing the problem of street children, and how these models can combine in a mutually beneficial way that puts the street child at the center in a lens of empowerment.
Looking forward to the 23rd!Best,Anne PaoFull-Time MBA Candidate 2013, University of Cape TownOn Mon, Aug 5, 2013 at 8:48 AM, Gil Lang <g...@safetylab.co.za> wrote:Hi Anne,Hope you're well and enjoyed the beyond amazing weather this weekend.I'm unfortunately still feeling the impact of pneumonia.
