if it is a surpac .dtm file then you should also ask for the .str file which will contain point data in a csv format and you will be able to open in notepad or other editor. Surpac needs both files with same creation date to recognise a valid 3d surface.

hubble xm have you had any luck getting surpac dtm files into manifold? I've got one sitting on my hard drive I'd really like to be able to open but haven't figured out how. Lorne supplied a nice script for importing str files, (no response yet to manifold sales request to import them), but dtm looks a bit more complicated.

sorry, i do all my 3d modelling work in surpac itself and have had no call to import dtm files to manifold. however i would be happy to assist in converting the file within the native package (gemcom surpac) to any of their supported formats for you to try your luck. Essentially my understanding is the .dtm file stores the triangle face info and the .str the point data. you need both files. depending on the complexity of the triangulation used in dtm formation (explicit breakline, spotheights etc) you may simply be able to import the str (csv format) file as point data and create a surface from that?

Thanks, I think the triangles of the dtm can be exported to dxf which suits me fine, I should get my data provider to do that. My understanding of the surpac dtm format is pretty much what you said, but I couldn't get a really good handle on how the dtm file is formatted from reading it, might be able to figure it out with more time. The particular dtm I have is quite sparse, and I wouldn't trust doing my own triangulation from the string file.

Is there a way to convert a surpac file to acad file without ruining the drawing file? Our department is using ACAD in designing, while the Geology department is using this software called Surpac by Gemcom. My problem is everytime I ask for a copy in .dwg my file will only show the contours, all the texts, e.g. elevations and labels are not imported to the .dwg file which makes it useless since I need those data in my design. I attached a sample of the converted file. I hope you can help me with this.
