Hey!
It has been a busy week at the farm. On our recent farm walks we find endless tasks to be done, but we surprise ourselves and usually come close to finishing the large list of things to do by the end of the day. Also with recent warmer weather we are excited to have tomatoes ripen and Thursday there was a record number for this year.
Today we were reminded how helpful members volunteering are, we had only one volunteer out, (thanks Mom) today and not the usual 3 or so as we harvested for market, so we thank all of you for being dedicated members to the farm and lending a hand all summer! Not the least of which was last Saturday when many of you came out to dig potatoes- my estimate was 1500 pounds! Way to go everyone! We had fun getting dirty and pulling out 5 foot high weeds.
With all the rain recently we caution you as you come and pick your cherry tomatoes- please do not touch the plants when they are wet, as disease can spread much more easily, we never touch certain plants when wet. Also if you are a smoker please thoroughly wash your hands before touching tomatoes as a the tobacco mosaic a disease can live in tobacco for 25 years and could devastate the crop.. With those dire warnings, please come out and pick there is actually a sign on the cooler door regarding cherry tomatoes and beans! Soon we will be picking the second bean planting which are the two rows in front of the sign, so be sure to check all five rows if you come in several weeks. An especially delicious variety is the one on the trellis it has purple spots.
Also does anyone know what size and Asian bitter melon is supposed to get? I was given some plants and am not sure what size they should be to pick. Thanks!
Next week we hope to see the following veggies:
Carrots
beets
leeks
greens
Kale/ collards/ chard
Lettuce
summer squash
eggplant
peppers
tomatillos
potatoes
onions
tomatoes
melons
celery
broccoli
etc..
See you soon!
Anna
