Hi,

Thank you for the great opportunity of the Groovy workshop.  I have schedule conflict but I could not find a way to unregister.  Would you please unregister for me?

Thank you and have a good time.

Subject: [GUM] Seeking Volunteers for next Gr8Workshop Saturday June 18

The next Gr8Workshop will be Saturday, June 18, 2016, from 9 am to noon for beginners and 9 am to 4 pm for experienced programmers. The event is hosted and organized by Gr8Ladies.

ABOUT

Gr8Workshops is a Gr8Ladies initiative where we offer entry-level workshops designed to bring more people of diverse backgrounds into the Gr8 (Groovy, Grails, Gradle, etc.) community. We feature two tracks: one for those new to programming and the other for experienced programmers new to Groovy. This event is free and open to anyone of any gender or background looking to learn about Groovy.

By the end of the session, attendees should have a better understanding of the Gr8 technologies as well as basic software engineering principles and testing practices that will improve their development no matter their primary language of choice.

Coffee, light refreshments, and lunch will be provided.

NEW TO CODING TRACK

The beginner course is accessible to those with zero knowledge of programming and is open to anyone who doesn't consider themselves "a programmer." This course will cover the basics of programming-- knowledge that's transferable to any modern language-- and we'll learn how to implement these skills in Groovy. Attendees should bring their own laptop but won't need to install anything; everything we do will be done in an online tool called "Groovy Web Console."

I hope you'll leave with a passion for coding and the confidence to keep on learning.

NEW TO GROOVY TRACK

The "New to Groovy" track is aimed at programmers with at least 2 semesters of college coursework or 6+ months professional experience. Attendees will learn about the programming language Groovy, a compiled programming language that promotes rapid development with an easy to learn syntax and the ability to leverage existing Java libraries. Groovy may look familiar because it takes features from other languages such as Ruby, Python, and Smalltalk.

The morning session will include a crash course and hands-on-lab with Groovy. Other sessions will cover 60-75-minute special topic teasers for Groovy ecosystem tools taught by local industry experts. The topics change at each workshop depending on interest and speaker availability.

Topics could include:

  • Grails
  • Test-Driven Development (TDD) with Spock and Geb
  • Functional Programming in Groovy
  • Building RESTful APIs
  • Ratpack
  • Gradle
  • Griffon

VOLUNTEERS

Gr8Workshops is only possible because of our amazing volunteers. We are always looking for instructors of special topics courses and Teaching Assistants(TA) to help with setup. Even if you aren't available the whole day, your help is greatly appreciated. All experience levels are needed. As a token of our appreciation, volunteers will receive a special thank you gift at the end of the workshop.

I'm emailing this group, in particular, looking for instructors and TAs.  If you are interested, send me an email, signup on Eventbrite, or ping me on slack to let me know you're willing to help.  Also, the list above is just a suggestion. If you'd like to talk about another Groovy related framework or tool, let me know.

SPONSORS

Sponsors are essential for putting on this event. From food to space, to helping compensate our volunteers, every little bit helps. As a corporate sponsor, your company's name will be included on marketing materials and the website. Individual Contributors are greatly appreciated and will be acknowledged during the event and in the individual contributors section of the main website. If you do not want to be publicly acknowledged, please add a note with your donation.

Donations can be made through PayPal (on Eventbrite or at gr8ladies.org), donating promotional items, sending a check, or directly paying invoices(such as catering). To discuss sponsorship options, email spon...@gr8ladies.org

This event is currently sponsored by Object Partners and the Nerdery
