Gang,

I'm thinking about speakers for GroovyCon. Here is one way to approach
it:

1. Solicit speakers willing to speak and travel even if there are no
speaking fees
2. Use that list in initial marketing material for attendees and
sponsors
3. If the bigger names require speaking fees then raise money before
asking them
4. Fill in as needed

Not much of a plan, is it?

GR8 had amazing speakers: Paul King, Guilliame, Dierk, Graeme... wow!
How can we get these guys?

In the US we have: Danno, Andre, James Williams, Scott Davis, Andy
Glover, J. Brown, Scott Hickey, i'm forgetting a ton of people.

I'd be willing to present on AST transformations and also be willing
to back out of the spot if we got bigger names.

Should we throw a list of potential names together, solicit speakers,
and categorize them into groups like 'willing to speak for free' and
'willing to speak but needs $'? Obviously, everyone prefers to be paid
and this isn't meant to create a hierarchy of speakers.

I'd be willing to head up the speaker round up. This is part of the
logistics I think would be fun.

Sounds like a plan to me: I'm always up for sounding smart in front of a crowd.

I know we shouldn't fill out the schedule with too many non-Groovy
speakers, but there are two local presenters that I thought did a nice
job recently and there is some overlap with Groovy in some way:

Jeff Ferguson - Talked about DSLs using Microsoft Oslo and M-Grammer
with C#. It was nice to see the grammar and language tools that MS
offers. If there is a DSL track, this might make a nice addition.

Kurt Christianson - Talked about Arc (Paul Graham's Lisp variant) and
metaprogramming using Lisp macros. If there is a meta-programming
track, then seeing Lisp macros (and their immense power!) might make a
nice addition.

That sounds like something the Codemash audience would benefit from.
Which reminds me that Codemash is held close to you (Sandusky, OH) every January, we had a Groovy talk in each slot by the way ;-)

I spoke with all the speakers at the gr8conf. Only one mentioned any
kind of remuneration, that was limited to airfare and hotel. Someone
mentioned, too, that Guillaume and Graeme will likely be fully paid
for by Spring. We'd have to double check. I'll send out a mail to
everyone I spoke with and have an email for and try to get a better
understanding of expectations.

If we are going to go with the gr8 brand, Soeren will likely give it
up for airfare/hotel/pass as well.

I don't have a problem with categorizing, but we should nail down the
bigger speakers first, imho, which means getting a date set, which
means getting a venue selected and likely held. Once we have a better
handle on costs, we can build a budget and back out or cough up the
differences ourselves. Can we make a venue, and a date decision this
week? Should the organizers, those that are local, anyway, meet and
try to break down the tasks and assign people to them? Ad hoc is fine,
though I fear there may be something of a herd mentatility and we are
all rushing in the same direction.

Personally, I believe we should not obfuscate the intention of the
conference and have it be exclusively about Groovy, Grails, Griffon
and related technologies. My fear is that once you lose focus, you'll
lose people interested in the Groovy technologies, but there won't be
enough meat for those that are interested in other subjects.

I think it would be a good idea to have a few of us sit down and try
to nail some of this stuff down, especially dates and venue. Bill,
you had mentioned doing a walkthrough of the Holiday Inn. Would it
make sense to schedule a walkthrough of that sometime this week and
meet afterwords at a coffee shop/restaurant to discuss immediate next
steps? I think I'm free most nights this week. What are other
people's schedules like?

I don't think there is a speaker for the June Groovy.MN meeting, you
could probably turn it into a planning session for all those involved.

We have much to do and not much time in which to do it. Shaun and I
have discussed this. He is going to schedule a time for next week
after a couple of other things are settled.

Sorry for not jumping on this earlier, but I think Ted Naleid and Joe
Hoover were planning to present their Build Test Data plugin at GUM -
not that we couldn't discuss a lot after the meeting as well.
