Hi Software Team,

please take a look at the schedule on www.tinyurl.com/pacsciworkshifts
We will need at least one person familiar with the pixel mapping/color
calibration during the last few shifts approaching Lifting, i.e. Sept
21st and 22nd. Chris, are you free any of those times ?
THen once we lifted it, Friday evening shift and potentially saturday
daytime we will likely be doing last minute software adjustments and
discover glitches. Any one free that weekend ?
If you are free please indicate so on the spread sheet.
This is a little preliminary and will likely shift around a little but
we need to get a rough idea of how this installation gig's gonna run.

:)

Mike

I'm free Sept 21/22, so I can help out with that. I might be free the
24/25th, but that is tentative.

Hi everyone :-). Thought I'd do a quick write-up on the research I've been doing. With the combination of Chrome, and 3D rendering, my first thought was that WebGL (http://www.khronos.org/webgl/ | http://www.chromeexperiments.com/webgl ) might be able to enhance the UI quite a bit. I did a bunch of research and experimenting and eventually came across this site (http://www.randelshofer.ch/webgl/rubikscube/index.html), a WebGL Rubik's cube written by Werner Randelshofer at ETH Zurich. Pull that link up in Chrome and check it out. He's done a beautiful job at creating the look and feel of a real Rubik's cube. I've been conversing with Werner over email and he has graciously donated his source to our cause :-). I am currently familiarizing myself with his code but I'm wondering if people think this is worth pursuing, or am I running off on a tangent? Also, if someone could pull up Werner's web site at PacSci and see if it works it would be an interesting test.

Hi Rick,

Wow! THat is super slick! Thanks for doing that research and even get
the source!

THere's an interesting question whether having a UI with a
actually-twisting rubik's cube display is more confusing when the real
object doesnt do that, but i totally agree that the WebGL layer could
really boost our graphics.

In terms of priority, with the installation so very close, I think this
is P2 stuff, i.e. things we ought to think about after we deploy version
1. But as an upgrade to the UI in a few months from now i think this is
great stuff!
By that point we will also have gathered a lot of on-the-ground
information about how people like to interact with the cube and we'll be
able to make a much better UI to match their intuition.

Check out this OpenGL demo: http://madebyevan.com/webgl-water/

seriously impressive!

That’s amazing! Some serious math going on there!

If anyone would like some help coding let me know J. I’m not sure how best to be helpful with the project right now J.

What times are most needed for volunteering for installation? I’ll be starting a new job the first of September, but I should be able to get a few mornings or afternoons off to help cover difficult shifts.

Yes, helpers during installation are still needed!
