Dear Sir/Madame,

Greetings!

Sub: Invitation for the State Level Workshop on “Enhancing Access of Crop Insurance for the Unreached”

Sajjata Sangh is a network of NGOs which is working in the area of Participatory Natural Resource Management and Agriculture based Livelihoods.  The primary goal of the Sangh is to increase the productivity of natural resources, which in turn would contribute towards the economic growth of the village and enhance the livelihoods of the farmers.  Sajjata Sangh also anchors Gujpro Agribusiness Consortium Producer Co. Ltd., which is a consortium of FPOs working in the state of Gujarat.

So far, the coverage of crop insurance schemes has been very low due to lack of awareness among the farmers, their perception and attitude towards risk mitigation in agriculture added with other factors. As per the 2014-15 data, the coverage of crop insurance against the gross cropped area stands at just 23 percent in the country; while in Gujarat, the coverage of crop insurance is less than the national average during the same year.  The coverage of farmers who do not avail crop loan is almost negligible.

DSC and Sajjata Sangh will be implementing a pilot project in partnership with its members in 10 blocks of Gujarat, which would aim to evolve and establish strategies to achieve maximum coverage of farmers under crop insurance particularly of small and marginal farmers; the institutional mechanism required to ensure proper flow of information for risk mitigation and risk management and accessibility of crop insurance product to farmers.  This pilot project would also experiment with empowering the CBOs in the form of SHGs, FPOs, watershed committees and PRIs as local level institutions for awareness creation, extension and claim assessment.

To discuss and reflect on the experience of implementing PMFBY during Kharif 2016 and to strategize on the way forward, DSC and Sajjata Sangh have organized a one day workshop on “Enhancing Access of Crop Insurance for the Unreached” on 7th March 2017 (Tuesday).  It gives us great pleasure to invite you for this workshop and participate in the discussion.  The schedule of the workshop will be sent latest by 2nd March 2017.
