Hello Jesse, Hugo,
I don't think mobile phones are safe in cars, let alone bikes - perish
the thought. IMHO, it's having to think about the conversation whilst
driving more than the physical aspect which creates the loss of
attention and danger - I don't think hands-free mobiles in cars are
really any safer than holding the mobile whilst driving - they're both
very unsafe ;-(
In fact, when I commute to work on my TA, one of the big benefits
is that my boss/customer/work colleague CAN'T call me up - and
on the whole they don't have a problem with that (whereas they get
all upset if I switch off my mobile whilst driving). IMHO, the problem
for car drivers is that they are (or feel - same end result)
pressurised into mobile use by work/business. Yet another benefit
of the TA!
Certainly in the UK, we bikers now have to live with, think on behalf
of, and generally be aware of, yet one more scary road danger (on
top of farm shit & diesel on the road, brain-dead car drivers, drivers
putting on make-up, combing their hair or picking their noses) - that
is, the mobile phone-juggling, other hand on the map, "look - no
hands", conversationally-challenged driver. Although traditionally
found driving at high speed on motorways, it's spreading to pretty
much all types of road - it's just not so obvious.
Unfortunately, dishing out speeding fines from speed cameras is
much easier "law enforcement" (and generates revenue for councils
and police authorities) than trying to penalise bad driving - even
after it's caused an accident.
