Subject: [transalp] Been Quite

Hey Alpers,

Been pretty quite on the list the past few days--you all must not be having
the weather we are in Seattle and are able to get out and ride without
getting soaked. Did manage to get out for a 20 mile ride yesterday between
the rain showers. My TA is still hard to start when it's cold. What I do
now is prior to starting I adjust the idle speed in 3-4 turns, start the
bike and let it idle without touching the throttle. As it warms up and the
idle rises I just adjust it back down into the 1300 rpm range. Not the best
way for sure but it works.

Hi Wayne et al,

Regarding riding in the rain....

I've never liked riding in the rain (who does?), so imagine my chagrin to
do my Motorcycle Safety Foundation course soaked to the skin as it rained
almost non-stop during the twenty hours on the 'range' Saturday & sunday.

I had quite a few bad habits to be rid of and was surprised at how the
easiest skills eluded me - like missing cones in the slalom.

I did pass though, so now I get a discount on my insurance and (more
importantly) get legal after 15 years of riding without a license.

I think I got the most out of the numerous videos that were shown in the
classroom parts of the training. It was pretty basic however, but is
highly recomended to those who have never done this kind of thing before
or friends who are thinking about buying a bike. The bikes & helmets were
all provided. Cost was $120 for thursday evening and all day saturday &
sunday.

I wonder what kind of courses they have in other countries?

Best wishes, Les

Here in Holland we have something similar.

after you have your motorcycle driverlicense, you can take on a voluntarely
basis, extended courses. and you get a discount on most insurances. We
have courses in: extended driving capabilities(VRO) extra extended driving
capabilities(VRO2). After these two wich learn you to drive over a zigzag,
evasive manuevers etc., then you can choose between a circuit training,
mountain riding or offroad riding and for real daredevils there is a course
that makes you understand how to drive in wet and slippery conditions.

I haven't followed any of them, i'm planning to take at least one course a
yaer from now on.

Der Les,

Riding without a licence in the UK is truly begging for trouble. Glad to
know you got one eventually.

In the Uk you cannot ride on the public roads, even as a learner, before
first taking Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) This takes about a day and
costs about £100, including bike hire, helmets etc.

You have a discussion about safety, law, comfort, mechanics.
You learn to get the bike on and off the side stand and centre stand, start
and stop the bike, move off into the road, turn left and right, negotiate a
course of cones and do tight figure-8s round two cones without putting your
feet down.

You close the day with a two hour road drive-round supervised by an
instructor in radio contact, usually with only two or three trainees per
instructor.

Well worth it and got me into biking and my beloved TA

Bill Dixon.

Hello Erik,
Could you tell us which organisation manages these courses in Holland?
I want to know because I want to compare with the situation in my
country.
Unfortunately, here in Greece there is absolutely nothing. Sometimes a
motorcycle club organises some course but this is really rare (and for
members only).

Playa Del ingles
tlf : 769105 - 141285
Mobile: 909 - 50 07 91

the guy there he 'll tell you .
also know that , bikes (like Domi) is more expensive to rent than a simple
car . This 'coz the very high incurance they have to pay .(included always)

Subject: Re: [transalp] Been Quite (cold start and spark plug replacement)

Wayne, I had the same problem during the last month (temperature
starts to go down in Athens). After beeing nervous many times, I
replaced all the spark plugs and ..presto! TA starts now almost
immediately even whithout using the choke (I am talking about
temperatures well above the freezing point).

The old spark plugs were (very) slightly worn (used for 14.000Km). The
upper half part of the insulator was in very good condition while the
lower half and the other metallic surfaces had some black deposits on
them. I think the later was the result of a) the increased gap, b) the
engine flooding caused by the failed attempts to start the engine.

But as I said before, the gap increase was very small, not uniform and
harly visible. I am still puzzled about a such sensitive relation
between the plug wear and the engine start difficulty.

Bill, in order to replace all of the spark plugs, you have to remove
the tank (use a plier to unlock the clips for the fuel and the vacuum
hoses). A bit irritating job, anyway. Check my site below for details

Well everything is a lot looser here. Sometimes this can be good,
sometimes it's bad.

I was surprised at how few old cars we saw in London this year. I don't
think I saw one 70's vintage vehicle. Blame that on rust & the MOT -
right? I suppose motorbikes have to be MOT'd as well...

Here, in Texas, you will see cars that are such amazing examples of
duct-tape & bailing-wire rigging that it defies the imagination. SO long
as it passes the emission and other tests you can ride it. The underside
of the body is not checked as far as I am aware. And older cars are given
far less demanding emission tests or none at all - I think if they are
over 25 years they are exempt.

It is similar with the driving license. My girlfriend's 15 year old son
is allowed to drive her Volvo wagon, so long as a licensed driver over 18
is present. Like most 15 year old males given the opportunity to drive he
is already 'posing' and adopting terrible driving habits that I am not
allowed to comment on ;) He will inevitably get a license at 16. Those
licenses seem to have some restrictions but as far as I can tell, they
can drive pretty well wherever & whatever they want. In his case it will
be his step-mother's behemoth Suburban - many tons of motorbike crushing
Detroit steel. THAT scares me.

As for the motorcycle test. NO compulsory training. Go to the Department
of Public Safety with your bike & helmet. Supply a car & driver for the
tester to follow you in and off you go round a proscribed course. Do the
quick multiple question exam on the computer et voila! A license. Or -
you could be like me and ride for years without one and pay the small
fine if stopped and nabbed.

This is Texas though, where we still like to keep things just a little
wild & woolly.

See ya pardner, Les

I think I did - Eddie will know for sure.

One thing I found was that you need the Honda wrench. It's a sorry
looking piece of metal that fits over the plug and has a 12mm(?) hex stub
at the end over which you place a wrench or spanner depending on where
you are. I used a 'gear-wrench' which are these cool little wrenches that
have a kind of ratcheting system so that you don't have to keep removing
your spanner.

The two obvious plugs are easy - the two hidden ones are SOBs. And don't,
like me, just get two plugs at the parts store, there are of course
four...

Good luck, Les

Subject: [transalp] spark plugs

Bill,
At Les's prompting... :-)
The spark plugs are as he says: The two obvious ones are no problem. Honda
claimed in the sales material that all of the plugs could be changed without
removing any of the fairing bits or the gas tank. I suppose it's possible
but, I wouldn't try it without warning my neighbors first. They may want to
take the children in to spare them from the profanity that might come forth
! :-)
Seriously, though. It's not difficult to pull the side panels, seat and gas
tank for easier access to the two "hidden" plugs. Just follow the plug wires
to those. You'll need the Honda plug wrench and a 12mm spanner or one of the
nifty ratcheting closed-end wrenches that Les mentions. (A set is on my
Christmas wish list.) Be careful with the plug on the front cylinder (left
side). The radiator fins are awfully close to the plug area. You might want
to tape a piece of cardboard over the radiator to protect your hands as well
as the rad. fins.
That's it! Have fun!
Oh! You might want to put a small amount of anti-seize paste (just a tiny
bit) on the threads of the new plugs before installing them, too.

I checked--8000 sp pesatas=about $48.37 USd. Sounds like a
wonderful place for a mid winter retreat! (Airfare from the Western
US would be a bitch--besides Hawaii is closer.)

All this stuff is in great shape. Thanks a ton.

I replace the plugs only when I do a complete tune-up. To gain access to the
front exhaust valve I remove the radiators, so getting to the plugs isn't a
problem then. I don't use the Honda plug wrench. I use a deep socket, an
extension, and a ratchet to remove the plugs. I use a flexible sparkplug
tool to insert the new plugs, but a piece of rubber hose would work as well
(as someone else mentioned here before). I tighten the plugs with a torque
wrench -- this is important.

It seems I gave you a wrong URL yesterday

this is the page without frames:
http://transalpist.tripod.com/moto/sparkplug.htm

the framed version:
http://transalpist.tripod.com/moto/frame1.htm
from there you select "TA-Tech" then "Maintenance"

Frames are nice looking albeit a bit confusing, even to the authors :)

PS A correction about tank removal: actually you don't need to remove
it in order to replace the rear top plug but you definitely need to
move the tank to the front in order to make room to approach the plug.
To achieve this, you must unscrew the 12mm tank bolt.
If you remove the fuel and vacuum hoses from the one side (it's an
easy job if using a plier to loosen the clips) and completely remove
the tank, then work could be easier. But that wouldn't be absolutely
necessary.
When trying to set the tank in it's original position, be careful
about the two large black rubber "rollers" (on the sides) that help
tank to "plug" in the frame.
