Subject: Consumer protection
After purchasing printers or fax machines, European consumers encounter
basic problems in obtaining replacement ink, drum and other cartridges.
Often, older devices within a line of products cannot be fitted with the
same ink and drum cartridges as later models. Equally, replacement ink
and drum cartridges still in stock for previous models can often not be
used in newer models, let alone in new devices from a different range.
The option of refilling ink or toner cartridges, an environmentally
friendly alternative, is almost never offered for popular devices, or is
not taken up by consumers because it is complicated and laborious.
Does the Commission have any plans to introduce a
_single_standard__for_printer_and_toner_cartridges_, as is the case with
_mobile_telephones_chargers_? The European Union should support the
creation of such _harmonised_rules_and_regulations_. The development and
production of such standards for drums and cartridges for printers,
photocopiers and fax machines would also help to protect the environment
and use resources efficiently and thus be in keeping with the European
Union's objectives.
