A friend of mine and I are planning a self supported tandem ride from San Francisco to LA in May and need a case to ship our tandem from Durham to San Fran and back from LA to Durham.  Does anybody have or know somebody who has a tandem case for sale?

Jim,

You may want to do what I have done in the past, get a tandem box from a bike shop, then pack the bike in it. You may want to modify the box a bit with duct tape and some internal 1x2 boards.

Jim, at Allstar bike shop we keep some Santana bike boxes in stock for shipping. Minimal disassembly is reguired as they are large boxes and must be shipped via motor freight. Jeff

I purchased a tandem shipping case from Bike Pro USA several years
ago. This is a very nice, well-padded case, with wheels on the bottom
and a steel frame with mounting forks. Info on the custom case can be
found on their website at:

http://shop.bikeprousa.com/Tandem-Race-Case-A-31.htm

I live near North Hills in Raleigh and will rent it to you for $50.

Check with Allstar, if they have extra ones they will sell them to you for $40.   I built one a few years back to go to Washington.  It was not as hard as you might think.  I used 3-4 bike boxes some 1 X 2 as cross bracing.  It worked well for my aluminum tandem.  Came in at 68.9 lbs.  70 lbs is the limit for airlines.  Price goes way up if you are over that.
