The Grigg list is active. Carol has been very busy. Her father passed on and she has been trying to get things settled. She still has her e-mail address on aol. Hello every one. Louise

Ok here goes...
Venita sent me copies of the papers she used for her lines to get into the DAR for Joel Elam, and other papers, one being Record of Ancestry with Sharon Houston's name on it, I know she is on the Grigg group and is also from Woodford Grigg's line. On these papers it shows Jesse Grigg born 1732 Bristol Parish, Prince George County Virginia. Another paper suggests his birth as 1744. He died after 1810 Cleveland County North Carolina. Another paper says he died post 1810 in Rutherford County, North Carolina.  Married (1) Nancy (possibly Webb), (2) Martha Elam. There is a marriage bond for the proof of marriage to Martha Elam daughter of Joel Elam and Poebe Hill, but no bond or records to prove Nancy as a Webb.
On 12 May 1768 Jesse Grigg witnessed a deed between his father, Abner Grigg, SR., and Jonathan Robertson for 500 acres in Mecklenburg County NC.
After his father's death about 1784 and because his brother Abner Grigg had already removed to Greenville County Viginia, Jesse Grigg left Dinwiddie County and settled in Mecklenburg County Viginia.
He lived in Mecklenburg County until the 1790s when he and several of his family members removed to Rutherford County North Carolina.
________
My half sister as I have posted in past years is from Woodford Grigg son of Jesse Grigg and first wife Nancy (Webb?) line, my husband is from Jesse Grigg and Martha Elam's son Joel Grigg who married Nancy Eunice Patterson's line. I joined the Patterson Group because of this a couple years ago. On the Patterson group it has come up about a Sarah Grigg married to a William T. Patterson and also discussion of Sarah Grigg married to Samuel Collins.
I can not remember if Harald Reksten is on this group or not, but is on the Patterson Group.If you are also on this group Harald I hope you do not mind me posting the postings here asking for more clarification. Harald has brought up some doubts about Jesse Grigg that has now confused me, I am hoping that someone may be able to help with him.
__________
Haralds posts:
I agree with you that the Sarah Grigg, that married William Patterson, is most
likely the daughter of Jesse Grigg. There were a lot of related Grigg families
in Rutherford County. Thus there were most likely two Sarah Griggs. I've not
seen any of the names of the children of Sarah Collins, but perhaps the names of
the children might lead to the father of the Sarah Grigg that married Samuel
Collins.
I also doubt that Jesse Grigg was born in 1732 as much of the internet
indicates. There is no record in Bristol Parish, Prince George County that
indicates he was born in 1732 and there are a lot of Grigg baptisms and those
records are considered complete. But it is likely that Jesse is from the
Bristol Parish Griggs. The question is which one. My feeling is that Jesse
Grigg was not married twice and the one that moved to Rutherford County with his
brothers was likely born much later than 1732. For now I have the father of
Jesse Grigg as Unknown in my database.

The birth year of 1732 vs 1744 is critical. There is no verification that I can
see that Jesse was born in 1732. The records of Bristol Parish show:

Elizabeth, daughter of James and Frances Grigg born 24 April 1726;
James, son of James and Frances Grigg born 7 January baptized 24 January 1729;
Peter, son of James and Frances Grigg born 6 March 1731/2 baptized 5 Nov 1732;

Wm, son of Abner and Mary Grigg born 6 March 1740;

Susan, daughter of Wm & Eliza Grigg born 11 June 1720 baptized 25 August 1722;

Burrel, son of Jessey & Amey Grigg born 28 April 1741;

The Jesse Grigg that married Matha Elam could be the brother to the other Griggs
in Mecklenburg County. Thus there could be two Jesse Griggs. The elder shown
above (born before 1725) is the father of Burrel. And a 2nd younger Jesse, son
to the elder Jesse, that married Martha Elam. The older Jesse could be the one
that had a deed in 1768 with his father Abner.

I don't know what is what but until the birth dates for Jesse have some
substantiation it is hard to draw too many conclusions.

So my questions are:
1. Who are the 2 Sarah Griggs and who are their parents? I know Joel has a sister Sarah and I believe her  to be the one married to William Patterson.
2. Has there been a date found for Jesse Grigg's birth?
3. Was he married really married to Nancy before he married Martha Elam?
4. Are the parents of Jesse Grigg married to Martha Elam...
    Abner Grigg and Mary Ford? Is there documents to show this if they are?
5. Which Jesse Grigg moved to Rutherford county North Carolina?

I know there is a lot of things unanswered in the Grigg lines, but I am wanting to finally put all this into my genealogy program and do not want to put beyond Jesse grigg and Martha Elam if it is not really accurate information. But if not right how was it approved by the DAR?

Ok anyone ready and willing to tackle all these questions for me, LOL
Becky Corn

Hi Becky,
How are you? The only thing I can help you with is that Jesse grigg couldn't have died in Cleveland Cty, as it was formed from Rutherford cty about 1840 or 1850.
The census for Cleveland county was first taken in 1850. So that's my two cent's worth.
Hi to all Grigg cuz's.
Melanie Malone
Granddaughter of Minnie "Ethel" Grigg b1890 died 1967 married to Raleigh Washington Fortune b 1891 died 1976, I think. Ethel is the daughter of Doc Franklin Grigg and Nancy Ellen Wolfe. Anyone else here from this line?

Thanks,
Melanie

Carol Morrison did an excellent job answering those same questions for me, Becky, but I no longer have them.I know I will not do it nearly as well...but I will try. With Lloyd's help, I helped Venita get into DAR. .

I have information that Lloyd Bockstruck shared with me.and he did an excellent job as did Carol Morrison...Lloyd descends from Jesse Grigg and his first wife through their son Burrell Grigg.who came to Bond County IL.

As for the parents of Jesse Grigg, Lloyd Bockstruck gives it as Abner Grigg and Mary Ford.  He said at one baptism of their son William in 1740 Brisol Parish the forename of Abner Grigg's wife was given as Mary; Another son, Frederick Grigg, named a daughter Mary Ford Grigg which suggests that was the name of his mother.  He also gave as support for the naming the will of William Haskins of Henrico County dated 27 Dec 1742.  In it he named as legatees Frederick Ford, son of Matthew Ford, William Ford son of Matthew Ford and Mary Grigg, the wife of Abner Grigg.

My impression the proof that Jesse is the son of Abner and Mary Ford Grigg is based on location and  tax records at the appropriate time.

 Both Lloyd and Carol agree that Jesse was likely born about  1744 based on tax lists.  Both Carol and Lloyd agreed that the first wife of Jesse Grigg cannot be proven but both believed there was a first wife..  Jesse lived in Dinwiddie County  until 1784 when he moved to Mecklenburg County VA.  In 1785 he paid pp taxes in Dinwiddie County but in 1786 he paid in Mecklenburg Co VA.

 On 11 December 1786 there is a marriage bond in Mecklenburg County VA for Jesse Grigg and Martha Elam. It is my belief that at this point the first wife had to be deceased.  There is also one there for his son Burrell Grigg to Sabra Elam 08 October 1787.  Jesse lived in Mecklenburg County until the 1790's  when he and several family members moved to Rutherford County NC.  The fact these are the same people can be documented by a POA for the sale of the land in Mecklenburg signed by Sabra in NC because  she was unable to travel for health reasons (enciente?)

There is no proven death data that I have been able to find for Jesse Grigg and Martha Elam.  My own gr gr grandma Frances Grigg married Alexander Glenn 10 October 1815 in Rutherford NC. Jesse did not sign for her marriage bond.  Therefore I feel he was either deceased or had left the area.  There is no burial place for Jesse except a marker left by a descendant which he erected much later based on the fact that he had been told as a child that Jesse Grigg the sire of the group was buried.  I have not ound any documentation to confirm it.

 I personally show that Sarah Grigg, daughter of Jesse and Martha Elam Grigg married a William Patterson: 13 October 1813 in Rutherford Co N.C..  I show Sarah Grigg who likely married Samuel Collins was likely the daughter of Jesse Grigg and his first wife. who may be Nancy Webb.but there is no documentation on her name..  Lloyd's information seemed to say this also.

Becky, I wish I could do a better job of this..I am sure either Carol or Lloyd would have been able to do better but I hope the info I am sending helps you and anyone else interested.
