Dr. Robert Holcombe Morrison, 86, of Fayetteville, died at his home on
Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, with his family by his side. A retired
obstetrician/gynecologist, Dr. Morrison practiced medicine for 42
years, the last 31 of which he spent in Fayetteville. During his
career, he delivered more than 17,000 babies. He was well known and
regarded by his patients for his care and attention, and for the
personal interest he took in their lives. Upon his retirement in 1986,
he remarked that "the good thing about medicine is just to be able to
sit down and talk to people. That's what I will miss the most, the
people."
Dr. Morrison was born in Charlottesville, Va., on Aug. 25, 1920. As a
boy, he was an Eagle Scout. The son of a naval officer, he moved
frequently during his youth but returned to Charlottesville for
college and medical school, receiving both his undergraduate and
medical degrees from the University of Virginia, the latter in 1944.
While in college, he was on the swim team, a member of Theta Chi
fraternity, raised Siamese fighting fish to help meet expenses and
joined the United States Navy. After medical school, and during World
War II, Dr. Morrison served as a medical officer in the Navy in the
Pacific theater of operations. He was honorably discharged from the
Navy on Nov. 1, 1954, with the rank of lieutenant commander.
Dr. Morrison moved from California to Fayetteville in 1955 and went
into private practice as an obstetrician/gynecologist with Dr. Ed
Garber. Later, their practice became known as Garber, Morrison and
Daniel. He was a lifetime member of the North Carolina Medical
Society. He also served on the FTCC Foundation Inc., and, after his
retirement, he received an associate degree from Fayetteville
Technical Community College in computer science.
Dr. Morrison had many interests. He loved to fly his 250 Piper
Commanche, and when his two youngest daughters started taking flying
lessons, he became a flight instructor in order to teach others how to
fly. He was a certified scuba diver. He loved to play chess and
cribbage and loved gardening, particularly growing orchids and day
lilies. He loved to raise birds, especially parakeets. His greatest
joy, however, was in discovering his family history and in teaching
others how to do the things he loved to do.
Dr. Morrison was preceded in death by his wife, Emma King Tucker
"Tuck" Morrison; his parents, Vice Adm. Ocie Butler Morrison Jr. and
Stella Holcombe Moodey "Teddy" Morrison; and his sister, Mary Morrison
South. He is survived by four daughters, Charlotte M. Jordan, Beverly
M. Bledsoe and husband Joseph A. Bledsoe II, Robin M. Horner and
husband William Wesley Horner, and Carol A. Morrison, all of
Fayetteville; his six grandchildren, Robert Jordan and wife Kimberly
Jordan of Eden, Jody Bledsoe and wife Kimberly Bledsoe of
Fayetteville, Ann Schultz and husband John Schultz of Raeford, Mark

His mother "Teddy" is the one that got him, my mother and me interested in doing family research; although it has been several years since he was able to go on a research trip. He descends from the Grigg family through his father's side. Working the way back...
