When teaching a variety of courses in college I quizzed: “When I say, ‘I am the best looking professor’, am I using past, present, or future tense?”
Class responds in unison: “Past tense.”
Then I added: “And if I say, ‘I am also the most humble professor you know’, what figure of speech am I using?”
On this the class is almost evenly divided. Half say “exageration” and the rest say “hyperbole”.
I get no respect.
