"Laid Off" is such an ugly phrase. When executives in a company meet to evaluate performance balanced with need, and are forced to “lay off” workers, here are some terms they use in place of “laid off” so their discussion doesn’t sound so bad . . . .
1. Executive culling
2. Job separation
3. Payroll adjustment
4. Personnel surplus reduction
5. Reduction in force or "RIF" (verb form: "I was riffed")
6. Redundancy elimination
7. Refocusing of the skill mix
8. Resource reallocation
9. Right-sizing
10. Workforce imbalance correction
And the best (or worst)
11. Drowning the kittens
