The plot of Saraswatichandra is a complex and intriguing one, spanning different locations, time periods and characters. The novel is divided into four parts, each focusing on a different aspect of the story. The first part deals with the administration of Buddhidhan, a minister of Suvarnapur, who invites Saraswatichandra to his city and offers him a position in his court. Saraswatichandra accepts the offer, but soon realizes that Buddhidhan is a corrupt and oppressive ruler, who exploits the people and neglects his family. Saraswatichandra tries to reform Buddhidhan, but faces resistance from his enemies and allies alike.

The second part focuses on the family life of Gunasundari, Saraswatichandra's mother-in-law, who lives in Bombay with her husband Laxminandan and son Guman. Gunasundari is a pious and virtuous woman, who suffers from the ill-treatment of her husband and son, who are both greedy and immoral. Gunasundari tries to protect her daughter-in-law Saraswati, who is also a victim of domestic abuse. Saraswati commits suicide after learning that her husband has an affair with Ghuman's wife. Gunasundari blames Laxminandan for her daughter's death and leaves him. She later adopts a girl named Kumud, who becomes her companion and confidante.

The third part revolves around the political administration of Ratnanagari, a princely state ruled by Lakshmanrai. Saraswatichandra is betrothed to Kumud, the daughter of Vidyachatur, the prime minister of Ratnanagari. However, he breaks off the engagement after reading his mother's suicide letter, which was forged by Ghuman. He travels to Ratnanagari to inform Vidyachatur about his decision, but falls in love with Kumud after meeting her. Kumud also loves him, but respects his wish to end their relationship. She agrees to marry Pramadadhan, the son of Dharmadhikari, a powerful politician. Pramadadhan turns out to be an alcoholic and abusive husband, who tortures Kumud and tries to kill her with the help of his mistress Kalika. Saraswatichandra rescues Kumud and helps her escape from Pramadadhan.

The fourth part depicts the dreamland of Saraswati, where Saraswatichandra and Kumud finally unite after overcoming many obstacles. They live in a secluded ashram with their guru Vishnudas, who teaches them the principles of spirituality and morality. They also meet Kusum, Kumud's sister, who loves Saraswatichandra and sacrifices her happiness for him. Saraswatichandra and Kumud face many challenges from their enemies and friends, who try to separate them or harm them. They also have to deal with their own inner conflicts and doubts, as they struggle to balance their worldly duties and spiritual aspirations. The novel ends with Saraswatichandra and Kumud attaining enlightenment and peace.
