To get the file from GitHub you need to a TLS 1.2 capable client, like current browsers or a wget which is not linked against OpenSSL 0.9.8 but against an OpenSSL which at least version 1.0.1. You get these newer versions for example by upgrading to a newer Debian version - note that Debian 6 reached end of life in 2016 and your 6.0.3 has been unsupported for even longer.

Server side has disabled the SSLv3 encryption handshake, because of SSLv3 severe security issues. Moreover, your wget client is an outdated version and still use as default this SSLv3 encryption. You have 2 options:

so I have a simple wget command and somewhere to put my login credentials. I have tried using wget for Windows but again due to restrictions I can't put it on my laptop. Can anyone help with something for Powershell which is straightforward? Thanks!

Interesting that wget/curl/openssl even still try sslv3. Perhaps as a last resort? And we only get the error message of this last resort and not from the tries of the more modern protocols done before?

Since we wanted to download the file rather than just view it, we used wget withoutany modifiers. With curl however, we had to use the -O flag, which simultaneously tells curl todownload the page instead of showing it to us and specifies that it should save thefile using the same name it had on the server: species_EnsemblBacteria.txt

Hi, I made a previous post on troubleshooting certbot and was pleasantly surprised with the results. However, I am running into another problem with connecting to the website itself. The website is returning a ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR everytime I try on Chrome, and is also returning the error mentioned above when running curl or wget. I have tried checking sslLabs and -your-website.server-daten.de/?q=gencyberbook.com to find more details about the error, but not too sure where to look.
Does anyone know what to do with this error? Please help!

Likely you will want to be more specific about where you are saving the file to and what you are calling it.For that, we can use the -O, or output option with our wget command and specify a file path.

As is recommended and also shown with this example, this dataset is zipped.This means after you successfully wget the file, you will need to unzip it.To unzip the contents to a particular directory, we will use the -d option.

This technique obviously depends on the wget utility to be available. For security reasons your sys admin may not have installed it in which case you might use some fancy cascaded port-forwarding to get the patch to your box (or ask someome with more permissions after having spent 30 minutes raising a ticket which is going to be executed in the next 3 weeks)

But if OMA wants to use wget and pip to install packages that it needs where it wants them, that's fine. Unfortunately, neither pip nor wget work when OMA tries them. I thought this might be a proxy issue, but both wget and pip work for me when I try them myself on the cluster. Unfortunately, if it is a proxy issue, I don't have access to the system config files to add server information and I'll have to brave my sysadmin's office.

Hi, does wget work on your cluster if you run it in the console? often connecting to the outside world requires going via a proxy host on HPC clusters, especially from the compute nodes. if wget works on the login node (try e.g. wget -O - ), I suggest to run the first steps of OMA on the login node, e.g. run bin/oma -c directly from there.

Ah...you've nailed it. I can run "wget -O - " on the login node, but if I try to do it via a SLURM script, it fails ("Resolving google.com google.com)... failed: Name or service not known."). That was easy!

My two preferences here are going to be git-bash (the shallow fake) and the bash subsystem. What appeals to me most about the bash subsystem is that everything is there that I'd expect from a unix based system. I tried to run wget and (obviously) it wasn't installed. This was simple (to me) to fix as I'm already familiar with the installation process on Unix: I can run apt-get install wget and now I've installed the program I wanted to run.

The additional problem for me, is that git-bash isn't quite bash. It looks like bash, but it's not. It's masquerading. I quickly tried to run wget example.com and it gives me a command not found. Sure, wget isn't available by default, but typically here I'd install it. But...with a fake bash, I'm not quite sure how (though I'll work it out).

I also experience slow load times, but only if I browse the page from Linux. It doesn't matter which browser I choose it's always slow under Linux. I have attached two wget runs from the same network and you can clearly see the difference.

Ever wanted to make your own copy of the idgames mirror?

Instead of downloading a few WADs here and there, why not just grab the whole thing?

I use a command line tool called 'wget' to mirror the idgames archive(s). I'm sure there's GUI equivalents for people who are afraid of a command line, but I'm only going to explain here what I know how to use.

I have a copy of both the idgames and idgames2 archives on my server at my house, and using the below script at regular intervals, I get all of the new uploads as well. The first download will take you a while, so be prepared. Subsequent downloads will only get you the things that showed up on the mirror after the last time you ran this script.


Here's the script I run:
/usr/bin/wget \ --verbose \ --mirror \ --wait=2 \ --random-wait \ --no-host-directories \ --cut-dirs=3 \ --directory-prefix=/home/ftp/doom/idgames_mirror \ --dot-style=binary \ -berlin.de/pc/games/idgames/PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't abuse this command. With the options above, the wget program will connect to the mirror server with a random interval of between 1 and 3 seconds between each connection. If you shorten the wait time between queries, you'll hammer the server, and that usually makes server admins angry.

About the wget options:

    * --cut-dirs removes that many directories after the server's hostname; in this case, I wanted to get rid of /pc/games/idgames and substitute it with my own directory structure.
    * --no-host-directories will prevent wget from using the server's hostname as part of the directory structure on your local filesystem.
    * All of the other options should be self-explanitory.
wget comes with pretty much every Linux distro. Windows users can try a few links at [1] for Windows downloads. Mac-o-philes can use MacPorts or Fink to grab a copy, I think by default OS X comes with curl, which is a similar tool.

NOTE: The one thing I haven't worked out (yet) is that files that disappear from the mirror do not get deleted on my local filesystem. This means that over time, your local copy of the mirror will build cruft in the form of files that were deleted from the mirror but still remain on your hard drive.

Now that I have my own copy of the mirror, I ran a program that detects duplicate files using filesize and MD5 checksums. I used fdupes, installed from the Debian package archive, so it's available for Ubuntu users too. For the curious, here's the output of fdupes after I just mirrored today:

Run with:
fdupes --recurse --sameline --size idgames_mirror/ \ tee /idgames_mirror_fdupes.logThanks to the mirror maintainers, and all of the people who host disk space and bandwidth so that we can grab this stuff. If you look at the fdupes file above, there's not a lot of duplication.

Here's the size of my mirror directories; I mentioned above that I haven't figured out pruning files that no longer exist on the mirror, so your disk usage sizes will most likely be different (less).

I don't know of any GUI frontend for wget. It would be nice just to run a query to see a listing of available URLs from an individual index. A quick search of Firefox plug-ins shows DownThemAll and SpiderZilla ... the pictures seem to confirm that these utilities are quite similar to wget.

I've never tried setting up a mirror using rsync, but it doesn't sound impossible. Rsync is a GPL tool for maintaining a backup archive of a filesystem and it updates modified files as well as removing orphans automatically. I've just never found the time to put it to work on my system.


That's rsync no h, and in order to use rsync, you'd have to ask the people who own the mirrors for permission. The server admins on the server to be mirrored would have to set up either an rsync server or ssh access to the server so that you could use rsync to slurp up the data.

When you run rsync, the client rsync process talks to an rsync process on the server, and between the two of them, they work out the data that gets transferred. Using rsync would also take care of deleting files on the client that don't exist on the server, which I mentioned previously wget can't do.

I use rsync a lot actually... but in this case, plain wget works well because 99% or so of the Doomworlders only have access to the mirror server over HTTP/FTP, i.e. they lack God Mode on the server to be mirrored :)
