Ifeel like playing a train game. I loved Railroad Tycoon and its sequels but not the 2006 abomination, and want to play one of the spiritual successors. I am trying to justify the purchase (don't know if I will, they're both a bit beyond my budget), and would like input as to which one to play.
I don't own any of the games, but Railway Empire has some DLCs - and they are releasing some more I think. I don't want to start a discussion about DLCs in general, but in that case I'd wait until there is a Complete Edition or such.
I have both on my wishlist, if I was about to choose just one I think I'd go with Mashinky, it has slightly better reviews and overall reception. However, it's also in early access so I wouldn't play it immediately, right now railway empire is a better pick.
I love the railroad tycoon games, even RT3, so went for Railway Empire - it has its own issues, but they have updated recently and are still actively working through all the feedback (Which is nice) and do actively engage with people on their forums. As for Railroad Tycoon 3, I switched very quickly to playing the much improved Hawk and Badger version called RT3 Trainmaster Expert Addition - much, much better :)
having said that Mashinky is still on my wishlist :oP
have both and played them too :)
Railway Empire is more casual game but have something no other new rail game has (including mashinky) - competition (at least it didn't have as I've played it a few months back) the most important thing in there is start, first few minutes you played good you will have money rolling later. Very enjoyable game I have to say.
Mashinky will, propably, be much more complicated game and more similiar to Transport Tycoon or old railway games. It has very interesting quest system.
Graphic is very different too - Mashinky more like TT as said before with 3d cam for moving or obsercing how your trains are going. RE has more colorfull 3d grahics.
All in all both are great games. For now I had more fun with Railway Empire but when Mashinky will be closer to release date and with enemy companies it will be better game I think.
I own neither, I just wanted to congratulate a fellow Railroad Tycoon fan! have you played The Second Century expansion for Railroad Tycoon 2? RT2 Is now 32-bit (so i runs on 64-bit machines) and is available on Steam (heavily region-restricted) or GOG (ROW), and goes on sale for about $1.25.
