Nolan searches for a spare battery, but has no luck. He does find a generator in a flooded basement room, but it is ruined from immersion and almost electrocutes him. He is barely in time to charge the battery again. Despite being awake for over 36 hours without power, running low on food, and having his hand cut from cranking the generator, he continues to come up with clever ways to charge the battery (e.g. using his foot and later a rod). He also plays with Sherlock and shares his lunch meat given to him by one of the hospital cooks.
The film ends with Virginia's suicide by drowning with a voice-over in which Virginia thanks Leonard for loving her: "Always the years between us. Always the years. Always the love. Always the hours."

The reaction to these lengthy running times ranges from overjoyed to begging for an intermission. But this isn't an unprecedented move: There have been many movies throughout cinematic history that have clocked in at three hours or more, including some of the highest-grossing movies of all time, like "Avengers: Endgame" and "Avatar: The Way of Water."

Shows and movies need sustained popularity in many countries to crack into the all-time most watched charts. That means you can see titles with "Top 10" badges in Netflix's app for days, but they still may not be generating enough hours of viewing to make the all-time rankings.
For example, the first half of You's fourth season came out Feb. 9. The show, a popular psychological thriller about a serial killer, generated 183.9 million hours of viewing since then. And each subsequent season of the show has grown in popularity. But because this season is being released in two parts and the second half of the fourth season won't be released March 9, the final tally for You's full viewership won't be clear until early April.
Meanwhile, teen mystery hit Outer Banks returned on Thursday with its third season and racked up 155 million watch hours in just four days. And true-crime limited series Murdaugh Murders and British horror-thriller film The Strays, both released Wednesday, have been building search interest on Google.
But TV shows need to eclipse half a billion hours to make it onto the all-time list, and films need more than 200 million. Even the most popular shows and movies need multiple weeks and enduring attention to accumulate enough.

Naturally, many viewers wanted to see more of such intense survival movies (preferably based on real events). And even though there are definitely some great movies of this kind that you can find and enjoy, the most high-quality ones are rare (but they do exist).
When it comes to movies with a stunning ensemble cast, 2015's Everest is probably right up there with Love Actually. This movie may not give its actors a lot of screen time, but everyone still gets their time to shine and the acting is excellent throughout.

Long movies are clearly here to stay, with many 2022 releases hovering at - or even exceeding - the three-hour mark, and now one of 2023's biggest releases, Oppenheimer, also has a three-hour runtime. 3-hour movies might not be for everyone, and certain 3-hour films are definitely better-paced than others, but you have to admire a long film that also manages to be compelling for a long time, which the movies below manage to do.
Christopher Nolan's no stranger to long, dense movies, but Oppenheimer proves to be one of his most dense, and also his longest. Memorably released the same day as the much brighter Barbie, Oppenheimer is about J. Robert Oppenheimer, particularly regarding his development of the first atomic bomb.
Paul Thomas Anderson is a filmmaker who's no stranger to making movies that easily exceed two hours, but even by his standards, Magnolia is long. Easily among the best 3-hour-long movies, it also needs to be, given it follows a large group of characters whose lives sometimes intersect in unexpected ways throughout the film, culminating with an unusual climax that (sort of) brings them all together.
One of the greatest Swedish movies of all time and one of the underrated long films of the '70s, The Emigrants is part 1 of an epic story about a Swedish family immigrating to America. They do this in the mid-19th century, which means the film ultimately captures the horrors and struggles of traveling between continents at a time well before technology made international travel relatively safe and straightforward.
It's a film that tackles this story in a way that's anything but dry or boring. It moves well for a movie that exceeds three hours, and has plenty of thrills, humor, and memorable characters to keep viewers engaged. It was, unfortunately, a box office bomb at the time of release, but was critically acclaimed, and is well-deserving of the praise it's garnered in the years since 1983.
The Human Condition I: No Greater Love is just one part of a huge trilogy that runs for over nine hours. Released in three parts between 1959 and 1961, The Human Condition is among the greatest World War II movies of all time, following a conscientious objector who finds himself forced to fight within the Japanese Army.
Still, given the three films were released separately while telling one story, it's not fair to lump them all together for the purposes of assessing the longest movies of all time. That being said, even just one third of the trilogy ends up being a huge and appropriately exhausting movie to watch, with this first installment being almost 3.5 hours long.
