TheNetworked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) is an international organization that, through leadership and innovation, promotes the adoption, creation, use, dissemination and preservation of electronic theses and dissertations. The NDLTD encourages and supports the efforts of institutes of higher education and their communities to develop electronic publishing and digital libraries (including repositories), thus enabling them to share knowledge more effectively in order to unlock the potential benefits worldwide.

A collaborative effort of the NDLTD, OCLC, VTLS, and Scirus, the NDLTD Union Catalog contains more than four million records of electronic theses and dissertations. For students and researchers, the Union Catalog makes individual collections of NDLTD member institutions and consortia appear as one seamless digital library of ETDs.

NDLTD will usually give large search results. To reduce any search result to a more manageable size, once you have run your search, use the Language limit on the left to only see citations for dissertations in English.

This page is for ETD repository managers or those intending to start an ETD repository at their institution. Most students and researchers do not need to worry about this, except for prodding their libraries and graduate schools into action. Click here to use Global ETD Search.

To contribute content to Global ETD Search, a university, a research institution, or a consortium of universities must build a repository of their Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs). For help in setting up a local repository, please consult Manage ETDs. It is the responsibility of local repository managers to develop acceptable open-access policies with their local communities. NDLTD encourages the maximum openness feasible: full text, all data, all metadata, and all multimedia files accessible to all with minimal embargo periods where needed.

NDLTD harvests metadata from participating repositories. It does not harvest text, data, figures, or multimedia. NDLTD organizes all harvested metadata in a NDLTD Union Archive. This Archive, which contains records of millions of ETDs, is managed by the University of Cape Town Digital Libraries Laboratory. The Union Archive itself is an Open Access resource, available to anyone wishing to build a service using the metadata stored in the Union Archive. Global ETD Search is a service built with data provided by the Union Archive.

To contribute metadata to the NDLTD Union Archive, you must configure the OAI-PMH interface of your ETD repository and you should register as an OAI data provider. Most repository software (DSpace, EPrints, Digital Commons, etc.) has a built-in software interface to allow harvesting of metadata by harvesters compliant with the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH). If you must use a system (such as a custom-developed or in-house system) that does not have an OAI-PMH interface, the OAI website lists numerous tools that will help you to develop software to support the standard.

NDLTD makes its Union Catalog available to any service provider interested to provide its own search interface to the Union Catalog. For up-to-date information on service providers, please consult Find ETDs.

When you become a member, the NDLTD member-management system issues login credentials. These allow you to manage your personal and/or institutional profiles and to renew your membership online. These login credentials do not give you access to any hidden information. NDLTD is an open-access organization dedicated to the free dissemination of research. NDLTD is primarily a forum for academics and librarians to discuss ETD issues, either online or at yearly conferences. NDLTD does provide the Union Catalog, a harvesting service for ETDs. The Union Catalog is available for anyone to use. For up-to-date information on service providers, please consult Find ETDs.

J-ETD is an open access, peer-reviewed journal sponsored by the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLTD) and hosted at the Scholarworks@UAEU repository of the University of the United Arab Emirates (UAEU). NDLTD already supports the Global ETD Search ( )

Each year many thousands of students prepare electronic theses and dissertations as they earn their degrees allowing them to share their scholarship and to master the tools for sharing research results. We invite you to read the journal to learn more about the theory and practice of producing, hosting, and indexing student scholarship that exists in digital format in the institutional repositories of universities, and to gain insights on the metadata that is indexed across many public sources. J-ETD welcomes articles by contributors from all areas of the globe related to all aspects of the creation, publication, distribution, cataloging, and indexing of original student digitized theses and dissertations.

We also invite you to become a journal contributor. We are interested in a wide range of topics ( -etd/about.html ) and look forward to a community of authors that represent the world and provide rich insights into the creation, publication, distribution, cataloging, and indexing of ETDs. Submissions covering both theoretical and practical applications are welcomed. Significant conference papers presented at the annual ETD symposium sponsored by NDLTD will also be considered for publication in J-ETD.
