Backstory: Have Indian Voters Found New Sources of Media to Help Them Understand Politics Better?

A thoroughly researched and rigorously analysed piece clearly bringing out the shifting balance between the legacy media and the emergent alternate variant.

An authoritarian ruler would of course try to strangle all channels of info -- whether for gathering or transmitting -- that cannot be strictly controlled.

That Modi at times opts to mouth just absurdly ridiculous stuff, e.g. he's not biologically born as he is sent by the Supreme Being to get his wills executed, conceivably, springs from two critical assumptions on his part. One, "people" -- or at least too many people -- are dumb enough. Two, the contrarian views will not be able to make themselves heard beyond very small circles.

This poll outcome has seriously challenged these assumptions.
So, his very first instinctive response would be to spike his efforts to control the channels.
That, however, may turn out to be a bit trickier than before.

<<The new Modi government may be constrained by its new coalition partners but it will certainly do whatever it can to rein in the incipient threat to the salience of its own narrative. Already a special multipurpose vehicle has been prepared for this purpose: the Digital India Bill, which the government claims is designed to protect users from disinformation and digital harms, could become the law of the land before long.>>
