Yeah!
The lion is virtually meowing.
At least that'd be quite a legitimate reading of the text. Even if one does not completely rule out other alternatives.

Of course, when decisions are made, understandably, by one person, things may change direction rather abruptly, without much hurdle.
Still more importantly, it may just be yet another act of deception as had been the persistent denial of any possibility of invasion till almost the very last. Even a demobilisation of forces from near the Ukraine border had been announced.
Regardless, the very significant shift in tone needs be duly noted.

Here's the official version of the (complete) speech: <http://en.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/68366>.

The voice does not sound like the usual roar of a lion. What's the matter?

Hi Sekhar and Dinkar,

Thanks a lot!

Thanks to Sekhar for carefully prizing out the main elements in Putin's yesterday speech in justification of the ongoing brutal and massive invasion of a much smaller and weaker neighbour.
It's really too much that Putin has equated this egregious invasion with the heroic armed resistance of the Soviet Army and the people against the huge aggression by the Nazi Germany in blatant breach of the Molotov-Ribentrop Pact, which Hitler had used as a vital prop to inaugurate the WWII.

Dinakar has contested the claim of Ukraine being a constituting element of "historical Russian land" (an echo of "Akhand Bharat"?) - via a very interesting and enlightening etymological dissection of "Ukraine".

P.S.: Sharing with other recipients of the initial mail.

Sekhar,
Very interesting! I agree, Modi would like to annex lands now in Pakistan
on some spurious historical basis.

A small linguistic point.
Russia says even the name Ukraine is Russian.
Krajina is borderland (or corner land) in many Slavic languages,
but `U-krajina' means "Outside the border."
So, if the word is Russian, they're talking about this area being outside the
Russian border.

Thanks for the post, Sukla. One can see where the pseudo-anti-imperialists get their analysis. I do hope people change their minds and post about the criminal. Regards, Sekhar

Relevant part with stuff expressed often by Putin fans: Crimea as "historical land" (Modi can use that!), "neo-Nazis" in Ukraine, "Russia preventively rebuffed the aggressor" ... ...

"NATO countries did not want to listen to us, meaning that they in fact had entirely different plans, and we saw this. Openly, preparations were under way for another punitive operation in Donbas, the invasion of our historical lands, including Crimea.

"In Kyiv, they announced the possible acquisition of nuclear weapons, the NATO bloc began actively taking military control of territories adjacent to ours. As such, an absolutely unacceptable threat to us was systematically created, and moreover directly on our borders.

"Everything indicated that a clash with the neo-Nazis, the Banderites [Ukrainian Nazi sympathisers], backed by the United States and their junior partners, was inevitable."

ON DECISION TO LAUNCH 'SPECIAL MILITARY OPERATION'

"We saw military infrastructure being ramped up, hundreds of military advisers working and regular deliveries of modern weapons from NATO. (The level of) danger was increasing every day. Russia preventively rebuffed the aggressor. It was necessary, timely and ... right. The decision of a sovereign, strong, independent country."
