After twenty months of daily massacres of civilians—especially women and children—and acts of unspeakable deadly sadism, including the organized starvation of the inhabitants of Gaza, the Israeli state, but also Israeli society, are facing their moment of truth as never before. So, can the Zionist state become “normal,” a state more or less like any other? In short, is it “reformable” or is it doomed to sink deeper and deeper into racist, obscurantist, and exterminatory barbarism against its neighbors, whom it treats as subhuman? And can Israeli society rid itself of its fascists and aspiring dictators, or is it already too late for it to free itself from its totalitarian temptations and supremacist demons?
The answer to these questions is provided first and foremost by the events of the last twenty months. Events that have seen the Israeli state cross one “red line” after another, not only by transforming itself into a mass killing machine and committing the worst crimes against humanity, but also by publicly claiming responsibility for them, going so far as to systematically declare itself proud of these macabre “exploits”! The conclusion is therefore categorical: the Israeli state is following an inexorable and fully assumed path towards its transformation into a criminal and lawless state!
But what makes this development even more formidable and sinister is that it is made possible by the active complicity and enthusiastic approval of the vast majority of Israeli citizens! This bitter and dangerous truth, which we have seen day after day over the past 20 months, is now fully confirmed by the findings of an opinion poll published by Haaretz (1) and passed over—“obviously” almost ignored by the mainstream media in our countries: 82% of Israelis want to expel the Palestinians from Gaza, and 47% of them want to kill them all, including the children!
Furthermore, 56% of Israeli Jews want to expel Palestinian citizens from Israel (!), and this percentage rises to 66% for Israelis under the age of 40. It should be noted that, according to the same survey, 70% of so-called “liberal” and secular Israelis support the expulsion of Gazans from their land, which already sheds light on the true nature of their protests against Netanyahu and his government: yes, they sincerely want to overthrow this government, and some of them, especially the families of the hostages, want a ceasefire. But that does not mean that they want lasting peace with the Palestinians, nor that they are against their expulsion from Gaza or even their extermination. Moreover, one need only read most of their proclamations carefully to see that, with rare and very commendable exceptions, they are not opposed to or even support the resumption of the war of extermination against the Palestinians after a ceasefire that would allow the release of the hostages held by Hamas.
Similarly, the huge percentage (97%!) of ultra-Orthodox Jews (Haredim) who support the expulsion of Gazans should make those in our countries who are quick to think well of the Haredim party more cautious, given that it is currently preparing for the fall of the Netanyahu government. In Israel, it is possible to be against Netanyahu and be just as bad or even worse than him...
The answer to the questions raised by Israel's moment of truth, as revealed by both the events of the last twenty months and the opinion poll already mentioned, leaves no room for doubt: No, this monstrous Zionist state is not “reformable,” just as Israeli society, which actively supports its genocidal policies, is not “reformable”! As a result, even if Netanyahu is removed from power, criminal policies will continue because they reflect the wishes of the vast majority of Israel's Jewish population. So there is no point in discussing the various “solutions” to the Middle East problem (one or two states) before answering the fundamental question: what to do with the Zionist state and, above all, what to do with Israeli society?
Sixteen months ago, in December 2023, we had already written that “ the methodical massacre and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians, which began with the liquidation of the veritable ghetto of Gaza, is being carried out with a clear conscience, as it corresponds to the historical objectives of the Zionist project: the creation, through the extermination, expulsion and subjugation of the natives, of an exclusively Jewish state on the entire land of Greater Israel! ” And we went on to draw the following conclusion: “ such a state is by nature monstrous, inhuman and... irreformable ” ...and “the obvious solution is clear: this state must be changed from top to bottom in order to make it at least ‘normal’, ‘like the others’. In short, it must be de-Zionized ” (2)
Having reached this conclusion, we wondered how to de-Zionize Israel. So we turned to two major experiences from the past that could help us: that of Nazi Germany and that of apartheid South Africa. And here is what we wrote: “ the denazification of Germany at the end of the 2nd World War was imposed by the powers that defeated it on the battlefield. In the second case, that of South African apartheid, the "purification" and "normalization" of the state was carried out from within, on the initiative of two previously enemy populations. On the basis of these precedents, we can already rule out applying the German denazification model to Israel, because it would presuppose Israel's military defeat, which would most likely lead to a terrible bloodbath of its Jewish population.”
Having thus ruled out German-style denazification, our article at the time declared itself in favor of "the South African variant, which assumes that Israel's de-Zionization will come from within, on the initiative of its own citizens ”. Today, taking into account not only the massacres and other crimes against humanity perpetrated day after day by the Israeli state in Gaza—but also increasingly in the West Bank—and taking into account above all the pogromist and exterminatory dispositions of the vast majority of (Jewish) citizens of Israel, we no longer think as we did 16 months ago, in December 2023: A South African-style de-Zionization of Israeli society seems unlikely, if not impossible, especially as time is running out for a possible “pacification” of this state and society.
Unfortunately, what is already apparent, albeit implicitly, on the Israeli horizon is the purging of this society, first of its (rare) critics of the Palestinian genocide, and then of any (Jewish) citizen who dares to demand democratic rights and freedoms. So, faced with such a situation dominated by a fascist, obscurantist, highly aggressive and violent far right, it is very likely that we will see the exacerbation and generalization of a phenomenon that is already beginning to emerge: the mass exodus from Israel of its citizens who are even slightly liberal and secular and who value their most basic individual rights. The result of such a development would be that Israel would be left with only factions of more or less delusional and supremacist extremists, who would sooner or later fight among themselves, while inventing new “enemies” that they will have to bomb or exterminate in order to perpetuate their power, which is based on a feeling of extreme insecurity resulting from the founding myth of an Israel supposedly condemned to live surrounded by so-called hereditary enemies.
Our conclusion cannot be optimistic, especially since we do not see how the Israelis could become more or less “normal” again, ceasing to promote and practice ethnic cleansing and the extermination of the Palestinians, and tomorrow perhaps of other neighbors, in the name of the myth of a biblical Greater Israel that must be reconstituted. So, for now, we are sure of only one thing: when Israel encounters its first truly great difficulties, and its current supporters, who are avowed anti-Semites, turn against the Jews once again, those who will come to their defense will, once again, be the same people who have always defended them tooth and nail and at the risk of their lives. That is to say, those few people on the left, preferably revolutionaries, whom these criminals dare to call anti-Semites today...
