New York State Legal Fact Sheets

In partnership with Harvard Food Law & Policy and Center for EcoTechnology, four legal facts sheets have been created to address common legal questions about food donation and food scraps diversion in New York State. These fact sheets explain both federal and New York State laws and regulations including:

We hope these fact sheets bring clarity to New York State grocers, restaurants, farmers, food recovery organizations and many others who are interested in donating or diverting food that might otherwise go to waste. Please e-mail organicr...@dec.ny.gov for any questions.

Fight Hunger in Your CommunityZero Hunger

Join the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in acknowledging World Food Day October 16th. The theme this year is #ZeroHunger. Over 30 percent of fruits and vegetables in North America are thrown out because they are considered “ugly produce”, produce that is not cosmetically appealing because it’s slightly the wrong shape or color. Food scraps make up almost 20 percent of the residential solid waste stream in New York State and much of this is perfectly edible food. You can find information on composting and organic materials management on our website.

Hunger doesn't only happen abroad, hunger exists right here in our own backyard. One in eight New Yorkers are food insecure. DEC would like to support organizations and programs addressing hunger and reducing the amount of delicious edible food in the waste stream. Read more about two new grant programs available for municipalities and emergency food relief organizations to increase the amount of wholesome food available to those in need.

Spread the word with your local communities about World Food Day and what WE can do to help achieve #ZeroHunger.
