How and When to Apply for
Federal Funding, Part 2

Tuesday, May 24, 2022
East Coast Time:  2:00-3:30 pm
West Coast Time: 11:00 am-12:30 pm

This is the second webinar on this topic organized as part of its support of the "Recycling Is Infrastructure Too" Campaign by the National Recycling Coalition (NRC).  Here is the link to the first webinar on March 16, 2022.  In the May webinar, NRC will highlight the results of additional research it has been conducting on the availability of Federal funding for waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting.  This webinar will include information about Resource Recycling’s Grant Watch, including federal Requests for Applications (RFAs) and examples of federal grants that have been highlighted in Grant Watch.  The webinar will also provide an overview of Brownfields grants available from the US Environmental Protection Agency. It will also highlight how to get organized for getting federal grants, particularly developing community-driven and community-based teams.

Webinar Presenters

David Hayes, Brownfields Project Manager
U.S Environmental Protection Agency, Region 4

David Hayes is a Brownfields Project Manager with EPA Region 4 based in Atlanta, GA.  He serves as the EPA Project Officer for a variety of Brownfields grants, including Assessment, Cleanup, Revolving Loan Fund, and State & Tribal Response Program grants.  Prior to joining EPA in 2020, he worked with the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) for 12 years in roles as an Environmental Engineer and a Unit Manager.  At EPD, his work focused on site investigation and remediation at sites subject to the GA Hazardous Site Response Act, GA Brownfield Act, and GA Voluntary Remediation Program Act.  He has bachelor’s degrees in Civil Engineering and Physics, and a master’s degree in Civil Engineering from Auburn University.

Sachi Segan, Sustainability Coordinator
National Recycling Coalition

Sachi Segan is the sustainability coordinator for the National Recycling Coalition (NRC). She is researching the availability of federal funding for projects listed in the American Recycling Infrastructure Plan that was developed by NRC as part of the Recycling Is Infrastructure Too Campaign.  She is working to find available federal funding listed in Grants.gov and by contacting different federal agencies.  She is also compiling funding that will become available as infrastructure bills are adopted by Congress.

Dan Leif, Managing Editor
Resource Recycling
Dan Leif is the managing editor of Resource Recycling, directing content development for the company's editorial and conference products. He has been a business journalist for 15 years and has covered the recycling sector since 2013. He is based in Portland, OR.

Jay Bassett, Senior Advisor
U.S. Environmental Recycling Agency
Jay Bassett served the public over 35 years both as a (retired) military officer with the Navy and as a civil servant leader with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.  He served 15 years as a charter member of the EPA’s leadership cadre in transforming EPA’s land and waste program to “Road Ahead” principles.   Those principles promote managing materials and products on a life-cycle basis, building capacity and integrating materials management approaches.  He worked to accelerate a broad public dialogue on sustainable materials management as both EPA’s Regional (Southeast) program manager and as a national advisor and expert.
Jay retired in 2021 and currently serves as a senior advisor to EPA.  He works on developing and implementing  a comprehensive strategy to maximize the Agency’s commitment to work with partners to achieve meaningful outcomes on priority issues in disproportionately underserved and vulnerable communities.  He also works on supporting a systematic means to achieve EPA’s mission through community-driven and community-based work.  He also serves on several advisory boards for a number of “sustainability based” local and national nonprofits and has been active in engaging and advancing K12 initiatives and green school programs and curriculum development.
