Our Legislative Successes in California Lead the Nation & Save YOU Money

All of NSAC’s three sponsored bills were signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom in the second year of the two-year session. This follows the passage of NSAC sponsored SB 343 (Sen. Ben Allen) for truth in recycling labeling, AB 818 (Asm. Richard Bloom) for truth in "flushable" wipes labeling, and AB 707 (Dr. Bill Quirk) to improve the mercury thermostat EPR program and create a $30 bounty, all in 2021.

Whether you are a waste hauler, municipality, sanitation agency, water district, or hazardous waste manager, we are saving you a LOT of money and stress. The long term results of the bills that we have passed in the last 24 months will result in literally in millions of dollars of savings to various stakeholders in California and beyond. Whether its reducing contamination by having truth in labeling on recycling or “flushable” wipes or eliminating mercury lighting sales to prevent them from ending up at your hazardous waste facility, these are real benefits of our work.

The National Stewardship Action Council (NSAC) has done it again! All three of our sponsored bills were signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom:

  1. AB 2208 (Asm. Ash Kalra & Sen. Josh Becker): CA’s Mercury Pollution Prevention Act - banning sale of mercury-containing lighting by 2025. Building on Vermont’s bill, California now leads the nation with the most comprehensive mercury lighting sales ban. Read the press release.
  2. AB 1894 (Asm. Luz Rivas & Asm. Cottie Petrie-Norris): Cannabis Vape Marketing for Safe Disposal Act - prevents marketing of vapes as “disposable” and instead must be marketed as hazardous waste. Read the press release.
  3. AB 1793 (Asm. Dr. Bill Quirk): Aquatic Toxicity Testing - requires the state to assess and consider replacing the aquatic toxicity test with the computational test to determine the toxicity which will eliminate the unnecessary incineration of non-toxic products. Read the press release.

This unprecedented success at passing California legislation, which leads the nation, takes funding!
