Bob,

Great builds and ideas.  GeoHay is already on the scene.

GeoHay is currently being used in Florida for the spill (see attached article).  Bethany Richmond is working to get an interview with Tim Stillwell to cover the story and hope to get it to the national media through her contacts.

If we could get someone to head up this outreach effort that would be great.  The concept is sound and we should be able to find enough material.

Thanks,

Dear Colleagues:

Dear Colleagues:

Is there a way to use fiber pad, or even large nylon mesh bags filled with shredded carpet, as a way to absorb oil from the gulf spill?  Tugs could be used to pull the materials along the periphery of the spill line, perhaps in a series of coordinated boats (like snow plows in the winter running 2-5 abreast to plow the roads).  This could server as a way to both corral and absorb and remove large quantities.  If this were done in the vicinity of sensitive marine habitats along the coats, perhaps we could prevent some portion off the landfall and devastation.  I suspect it could be arranged in a matter of days once the concept were agreed to.  If there is interest I would suggest that someone would need to step forward to be a fulltime team leader for a few weeks.  Perhaps one of our member companies would donate an experienced leader to do this.  I certainly can inquire in DC who the right connections would be to get an audience and my first stop would be the EPA’s head of ORD.  Polypropylene would be ideal as it is an “oil absorber” by its chemical nature.

Using the concept of GeoHay, perhaps layers of mesh pad with holds cut into it for flow is an option.  I am sure there could be many ideas to make this work.    In addition, perhaps GeoHay and/or old bales of carpet could be strategically places along shorelines to serve as an absorbing barrier to be removed once the situation is stabilized (a big like a dam).

What do you think?

Bob

FYI - CARE is the Carpet America Recovery Effort - the organization dedicated to scrap carpet recycling & diversion. (Which of course includes carpet padding).  More at www.carpetrecovery.org
