ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the Environmental Services Manager, the Recycling Director is responsible for the City's waste reduction programs to include the recycling program, the organic waste program and all other programs associated with furthering the City's goal of minimizing waste production in the community. The position operates within the Solid Waste Division at the City of Cambridge Department of Public Works.

Major areas of responsibility include but are not limited to the following:

  • Manage professional staff and administrative staff consisting of part time employees,  along with interns, and volunteers;
  • Program planning;
  • Develop education and marketing designed to increase waste diversion and recycling rates, including residential education on proper use of solid waste services;
  • Engage community;
  • Provide excellent customer service;
  • Manage contracted services such as household hazardous waste;
  • Oversee residential curbside recycling/yard waste/compost, and recycling programs related to commercial recycling, municipal buildings recycling and Public Schools recycling;
  • Manage public recycling drop-off center;
  • Oversee compost expansions;
  • Seek and manage grants;
  • Develop policy initiatives;
  • Manage special and seasonal program operations;
  • Provide recycling program analysis and any other related areas as determined by the City of Cambridge Commissioner of Public Works.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with the Environmental Services Manager and other solid waste staff in managing all of the various programs within the Solid Waste Division at the City of Cambridge Department of Public Works.
  • Establish overall recycling program goals, oversee the development of comprehensive recycling program policies, procedures, guidelines, and standards to ensure exceptional delivery of services to Cambridge residents.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor Degree in Public Administration, Management, Environmental Management, Business Administration, Political Science, or other related field.   Minimum of 5 years of professional work experience in recycling, including at least 2 years in a supervisory capacity.  Knowledge and experience in the areas of recycling and waste management best practices, public education, and marketing are essential. Knowledge of legal, policy and practical restraints that effect recycling programs necessary.   Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Knowledge of the Cambridge community and business climate preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Exposure to all weather conditions, noise, and odors when making site visits to various projects and activities. While performing the functions of the job, the employee may be required to stand and walk for extended periods of time. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office based with frequent on-site project monitoring and evaluation.

RATE: $79,076.40 - $88,909.24 plus excellent benefits
