If you click on the "Early Bird" pricing, it brings you to a page with all
sorts of "Master Classes", including incineration, which is right under
Zero Waste. There's also organics management, health and safety and others,
but it's not ironic these 2 diametrically opposed views on waste, discard
salvage and burning are offered by the same MSW group.

In the fifth book of the Acts of the Apostles, a wise old man named
Gamaliel remarks that if Christianity is false it will fail; "if this plan
or undertaking is of men, it will fail, but if it is of God, you will not
    be able to overthrow them."

Many people have tried to accommodate the zero waste message with a variety
of false teachings, such as incineration or landfilling, or biofuels, or
    whatever.

The zero waste undertaking is a great one, not to be disparaged, but also
not to be compromised. What if the colonists in 1790 thought it appropriate
for the French, the Spanish, or the English to control all land west of the
Alleghenies? Manifest destiny would never have come to pass and our
country would be mired no more than 200 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. But
those who persevered were those with a vision of democracy "from sea to
shining sea." Zero waste can do no less.

Yes! Zero Means Zero! None. Nada. No thing wasted.

There are people and organizations who say they're for Zero Waste but either approve of burning or burying, or decline to say they disapprove of incineration. I remember hearing one person on the board of a discarded-resource-related organization say, well, I myself don't like burning, but I wouldn't ask my organization to take that position. Whatever the person thought of her own motivation, what it looked like to me was -

    insincerity.

    Hi

Great discussion (I will forward all the emails from GRRN too that might not have made it to the Sierra Club listserves). The kids wear T-shirts as much of the work we do are clean ups, or plantings. The same shirt is preferred because we are trying to create a presence or brand for this club. Other Millbrae youth clubs all have their own t-shirts. Green Youth Alliance has to increase its visibility not really against say the Lion’s Leo’s Club but so we can attract more kids. Our local schools do not provide any environmental curriculum other than what one gets in biology or chemistry. So we GYA adult leaders hope to grow interest and then we can push for more curriculum so we can reach more kids and more families.

So while I agree reuse is great and I was at the Zero Waste Youth Convergence and their silk screening of used shirts was and is a fantastic idea, in this case it doesn’t help with recognition. (I have one of those t-shirts and 25 of my Mills kids were at the ZW Youth Convergence and proudly wear their t-shirts from that event. Also as a chaperone, I can pick out my kids in a sea of young people when they are in the same colored shirt.

Another reason for t-shirt over say a jacket or sweatshirt is that they are cheaper. The kids designed their own environmental theme tied in with their school mascot and are proud of what they came up with. Each of our high schools will have their own school design and then the front will have the GYA logo. All branding to help them educate our communities.

I have to follow up on some of the leads many of you have sent. Thanks to all of you for great suggestions and questions.

What about going one step greener and sourcing reused t-shirts? If anyone's interest is piqued, you can check it out http://www.stayvocal.com/

Please note that this reuse apparel company is also behind a new documentary coming out: "REUSE! Because You Can't Recycle The Planet.", which will be showing at ReuseConex in October.

    Hi

I work with a group of local high school students, Green Youth Alliance. I am trying to teach them how to go about green purchasing. Sadly none of our local tshirt silk screening shops carry any form of environmental shirt, or if they do not in long sleeves and they want long sleeve t-shirts. So I was wondering if any of you know of suppliers of long sleeve tshirts that have at least one or more green qualities:

    Long Sleeve shirt
    recycled content
    Organic cotton content
no child labor used in manufacturing
made in the US or better yet made in California
Cotton grown in the US or better yet California
Bleaching – not sure what to specify – thoughts?
    No sweatshop labor

Are there other environmental attributes I should add to the list so the kids can learn about creating markets for green products.
