The Communications Director will be responsible for providing visionary strategic and operational communications expertise and leadership to the Climate Justice Alliance. The position requires a high functioning, organized storyteller that deploys communications strategies for maximum impact and linking communications to advocacy to confront industry and government on climate justice. This also requires positioning CJA members and Our Power Communities as the leaders and solutionaries for a Just Transition who hold the remedies to climate change’s root causes. CJA’s Four Year Strategy calls for us to “change the story... shift the dominant culture and change structural power relationships, [by changing] the stories that normalize unjust power structures, mak[ing] fundamental change imaginable, and build[ing] the capacity to narrate the changes underway.” The Communications Director will be the key driver and convener at CJA to make this meta-strategy a reality.
They are responsible for hiring and management CJA’s communication staff and fellows as well as providing strategic communications support, training, and resources to CJA member groups. They report to the Executive Director and work in consultation with other CJA staff, work groups, organizers, policy, research, funder engagement personnel and regional anchor organizations across the nation.
The Climate Justice Organizer is an experienced general organizer with the motivation to step into a more senior leadership role at CJA in the next one to two years. With the Campaigns Director, they are responsible for supporting member groups, partners, and allies to carry out the Our Power Communities Strategy and Implementation plan as described below, including to building out our Just Transition work through Our Power Communities and regional hubs. This will support CJA staff in creating a road map to CJA’s National Convening in January 2019, while also lending their organizing experience to coordinating with our national alliance work, including It Takes Roots. They report to the Campaigns Director and Executive Director and work in consultation with other CJA staff, work groups, communications, policy, research, funder engagement personnel and regional anchor organizations across the nation.
