The 145th Street Corridor project (finally) begins!

7 months means November, so it seems likely the Light Rail won't open until then (that's an assumption, but you'd think they'd coordinate...)

Here's the shared Ped and Bike Detour:
Map of 145th closure 3152.png

Opening the connection to 147th will be good, but I'm not sure how the overall flow will really work... so it'll be good to check this out and ask questions.

As a reminder, the 145th design and repaving has been led by Shoreline, so the shared use path will be on the north side of 145th, and the planned off-corridor bike network is in Shoreline... I'm still not sure where Seattle is on connecting along 145th to the station? The Seattle/south-side of 145th sidewalk will be of standard width.

As such, connections to the south/Seattle direction may not be thought through...
If you're in the area or use the corridor outside of a car, I'd love to hear what you'll do...

Finally, I wrote this nine years ago: We need walking and biking improvements to N 145th St and I still don't think this project will be enough.

Keep pushing!

Seven-month closure of N 145th Street begins April 1

Post Date: 03/15/2024 11:00 am

Travelers who use N 145th Street near Interstate 5 in Shoreline should plan for additional travel time beginning Monday, April 1. Contractor crews working for the City of Shoreline and its partners will implement a seven-month closure of N 145th Street (SR 523) between 1st Avenue NE and I-5. The I-5 interchange will remain open throughout construction; however, the traffic on the overpass will be reduced to one lane in each direction.

The closure allows construction crews to install, build and/or relocate critical utility infrastructure to accommodate construction of the new roundabouts. This section of the street will remain closed until fall 2024. The closure is part of the City of Shoreline’s 145th Street Corridor and 145th Street and I-5 Interchange projects.

Construction updates are available at Engage Shoreline: 145th Corridor Projects.

Getting around the closure

Plan ahead for detours! This closure will have a significant effect on traffic flow and access in the area. Southbound I-5 on- and off-ramps will be open, but only accessible from the east side of the closure. We expect some occasional overnight closures of these ramps, but they will mostly remain open.

Travelers wanting to head east and west between 1st Avenue N and I-5 will need to detour and use N 155th Street or N 130th Street. Bicyclists and pedestrians will use a detour along N 147th Street. Detour signage will be in place during the closure, and we will continue to coordinate work with our transit partners, the Washington State Department of Transportation, and the Seattle Department of Transportation. Travelers are also encouraged to sign up for email updates for the 145th Improvements Projects.

Questions and Concerns

If you have questions or concerns about construction or the project, you can call the 24-hour construction hotline or send an email.

Tree removal

We have designed these projects to affect as few trees as possible. However, the project involves widening the footprint of 145th Street, which will require the removal of a significant number of trees. This removal will begin around April 1.

We will plant new trees once the project is complete. We will strategically plant trees in medians and along sidewalks to expand the square footage of the total tree canopy in the area. This aligns with the City’s goals for the corridor and the recommendations found in our Urban Tree Canopy Assessment. By planting medians or along sidewalks, the City can grow the tree canopy in an area that otherwise would be bare.

Removing trees is a balance between short-term effects and the long-term benefits of a more sustainable transportation system. By carefully selecting which trees to remove and planting new trees at a high rate, we can build toward the future in a responsible way.

Attached is a thought we presented to Spotts during our walk a couple of months ago. Also on the sheet is Shoreline's and WSDOT's intentions for the 145th interchange. So far I've not seen anything about SDOT's plans ... I fear SDOT might not have any plans (but hopefully they'll surprise me).

Sound Transit is being ambiguous about the when the Lynnwood extension will open, but they are advertising "trending toward a summer or fall 2024 opening timeframe" https://www.soundtransit.org/system-expansion/lynnwood-link-extension#:

Love this. It kind of forces SDOT to do the Ashworth and Corliss Greenways! We need to have them ready for the opening of the 148th light rail station!

Mark and I will.

We’ll try to get in touch with Shoreline planners to find out who in SDOT they’ve been working with, and we’ll also talk to Drue at the Tuesday Lake City event.

FYI, I asked Shoreline's 145th Team these questions about walk/bike access and received the response below:

It looks like 1st Ave NE will be open across 145th Street, is that correct and will the sidewalks be open?

And I believe many will want to continue west along N 147th St, and will want to cross at 1st & 147th. Does that sound right?

Thank you for the questions, Forrest!

The intersection at 1st Ave will remain open, so you will be able to travel north/south along 1st crossing 145th, as well as westbound away from the closure. The crosswalks will remain open as well. For the initial part of the closure, the contractor will keep the north sidewalk of 145th open for pedestrians to travel east/west through the closure. Roughly in late May or June, pedestrians will be detoured to 147th to travel east/west, and then come back south along a new 3rd Ave alignment to then continue across the bridge over I-5. The only part of the pedestrian detour on to 147th will be between 1st Ave and I-5.

Thank you! And please feel free to contact me with any other questions you might have

The other questions I would have are 145th and Corliss and/or 145th & Ashworth designated to be signalized?

If my recollection is correct, in the past I've seen Corliss & Ashworth & Corliss shown as bike routes in Shoreline.
However, the only thing I see now is Meridian having a signal as currently (and to be used as a bike route?)

This is important because major roundabouts are well-known to smooth out traffic flow. In so doing, they disrupt the downstream rhythm of slugs of traffic separated but lulls in traffic that signals create. This make is hard to cross at downstream intersections.

Yes Lee.  We have asked about signalized lights at Corliss and Ashworth in our second email to the Shoreline planner, but . . . we haven’t heard back yet.

Corliss should be prioritized because phase 1of construction ends there. The 12’ share way on the north side of 145th to the I-5 bridge will give safe access to bikes, avoiding the traffic on narrow 1st Ave NE.

(Ashworth will be in a later phase of construction.)

I think it makes sense to ask SDOT for an emergency bike plan from the south and west (the Interurban) to the 148th Station by the time the station opens.    (I’m not sure what to suggest east of I-5)

Greenways on . . .

  - Corliss Ave N from N 133rd to a signalized light at N 145th crossing. (Only the 143rd cross street does not have a roundabout or stop signs. Crossing Roosevelt isn’t a difficult task, at least for now.)

  -  N 137th from the Interurban to Corliss Ave N (Signalized crossing already planned at N 137th & Aurora)

  - Ashworth from N 130th to N. 137th (and later to N 145th and a signalized crossing for that phase of N 145th project)

and

  - Publicity and signage to direct cyclists to the new light rail station

Make sense?

Mark and I are working on finding SDOT contacts for this and other questions.

Jan
