Hello NW Greenways Members!

We're here to share recent news and upcoming events with all of you.

🌟 Happy New Year! As we step into 2026, NW Greenways is at an important moment where we have several projects we want to put effort towards and need people power to move forward. This month’s newsletter highlights our advocacy efforts on 3rd Ave NW, Roosevelt Way N / Pinehurst Station access, and NE Greenwood homezone expansion, along with open events volunteer and other roles that are critical to keeping this work moving.

If you’ve been thinking about where to put your energy this year, now is the moment to step in. Whether it’s helping advance safety improvements, building community through events, or taking on a small leadership role, your involvement directly shapes what we save the date for our February 5 meeting.

3rd Ave NW Safety Improvements
We’re excited to share that Matthew Higgins has stepped in to help lead the 3rd Ave NW Safety Improvements Committee. Thank you! The committee is actively connecting with SDOT to understand which projects from our prioritized list are feasible and how the City’s Neighborhood Matching Grant program could help move these improvements forward.

If you live near 3rd Ave NW or care about safety in this corridor, we’d love to have you involved. Please email nwgre...@gmail.com to join the committee, and jump into the conversation on Discord in channel #3rd-ave-nw-safety-improvements to help shape next steps and keep the momentum going.

Roosevelt Way N / Pinehurst Station Access
In December, our Roosevelt Way / Pinehurst Station Mobility Improvements committee met to walk the area. Next steps include connecting with Fehr & Peers design firm and work on moving design proposals forward with city leadership. This committee is open to additional involvement for members who live near the Pinehurst station area. Join the committee conversation on Discord in channel #connections-to-light-rail and reach out to nwgre...@gmail.com if you’re interested in supporting.

Homezone program expansion
In December, the NE Greenwood Homezone committee connected with the SDOT Home Zone program manager. This committee needs someone to step in as the lead to prioritize needs and move work forward with support in the wider NW Greenways group. Join the committee conversation on Discord in channel #ne-greenwood-homezone and reach out to nwgre...@gmail.com if you’re interested in supporting.

Home Zone Safety Improvement Update!
SDOT recently completed a targeted safety project at Greenwood Ave N & N 95th St as part of the Aurora-Licton Urban Village Home Zone. Using a crew-delivered, data-driven approach, SDOT was able to move quickly, combining resident feedback and crash data to reduce cut-through traffic, slow vehicles near a new crosswalk, improve visibility through daylighting, and simplify movements at the intersection. This project shows how smaller, faster improvements can make neighborhood streets safer without waiting years for major capital construction.

This project was led by SDOT's Home Zone program as part of the Aurora-Licton Urban Village Home Zone.

Upcoming Events - We need YOU!

Join the NW Greenways Events Team!
We’re looking for one or more event volunteers to help us grow community connections through organizing walks, bike rides, and happy hours at family-friendly breweries. There are several time-bound events that event volunteers can use for these efforts, including Bike Everywhere Day (May 13), National Night Out block parties (first Tuesday in August, August 4), PARK(ing) Day (September 18), planning walking groups for "Trick-or-Street" closed streets for Halloween (October 31), and the holiday lights bike ride (December, planned with Ballard-Fremont greenways group). This role is about 3–4 hours per month depending on what's coming up and includes attending monthly meetings, helping organize events, and occasionally partnering with other greenway groups on shared activities.

By stepping into this role, you’ll help strengthen NW Greenways, bring neighbors together, and create the kind of vibrant, people-centered community we all want to live in.
