1) The North Coast Railroad Authority (NCRA) has created an Ad Hoc subcommittee consisting of Humboldt County representatives, Clif Clendenen and Bill Kier, and Mendocino County representative, John McCowan.
2) This subcommittee will be holding three open meetings in the next month beginning on Friday, Sept. 28, 10 a.m. in the Eureka City Council Chambers. The first meeting will be focusing on the condition of the rail prism between Eureka and Arcata. David Anderson, a consulting engineer for the NCRA, will be reporting on his assessment of the condition of the tracks and rail bed, and the cost of returning the rail prism, bridges, etc. to operational condition.
3) On Friday, Oct. 12, Merritt Perry, an engineer for GHD (formerly Winzler & Kelly), will report on trail feasibility, rough costs, and options. And, on Friday, Oct. 26, the focus will be on the feasibility of a return to rail service on the North Coast. All meetings will be held in the Eureka City Council Chambers beginning at 10 a.m.
4) The subcommittee is expected to report back with some recommendations to the full NCRA Board at its Nov. 14 meeting to be held in Eureka.
5) The meetings are being formatted to focus on updates to earlier studies guided by technical experts, and not to repeat information gathered at previous public hearings before local agencies (Humboldt County Board of Supervisors, the NCRA Eureka meeting in July, the Eureka and Arcata City Councils, etc.). Public support and comment is important to show the NCRA that we care about preserving our transportation assets along the North Coast.
