This Thursday’s Humboldt County Association of Governments
(HCAOG) meeting has several critical items that the Board must decide
(below). If you can’t make it, email written comments. and ask that they be made available to the board.
Meeting Unmet Transit Needs
The most important transit system we have is RTS, yet telling your elected what you want in terms of improved service on this system will have little effect, because an agreement from 1976 creates silos of Transportation Development Act (TDA) funding for each jurisdiction instead of planning transit on a regional basis. This is an opportunity to suggest that HCAOG re-examine its approach to the dispersal of TDA funds to ensure that we have the best possible transit system for our region.
Putting Housing Where We Need It
HCAOG’s Draft Regional Housing Needs Plan fails to meet state-mandated statutory objectives and needs to be changed. Where we should plan for more housing? We could target areas close to jobs, giving more people the opportunity to walk or bike to work, or we could continue sprawling over our agricultural and timberlands. The final plan will have a substantial effect on our future transportation choices.
