The 65th consecutive annual meeting of the Greenway Downs Citizens
Association was held Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at 7 PM, at Devonshire
Center on Graham Road.
The first order of business was the election of a new Board of
Directors. Elected were: Jean Michel Campagne, Paul K. Hart, Jim
Lister, Robert Mansker, Henry Rodriguez, and Ahmed Selim.
State Delegate Bob Hull was introduced as the first speaker after
which he gave the membership a report of the last Virginia Assembly
and his thoughts on legislation that was introduced during the
session. Additionally, Delegate Hull discussed the growing problem of
housing overcrowding in various communities of Fairfax County and some
of the actions of the Virginia Assembly that are designed to remedy
some of the problems.
County Supervisor (Providence) Linda Smyth followed with a report from
the County Board of Supervisors, providing information on some of the
programs that are being offered by the county. She also spoke to the
issue of housing overcrowding and the problems that can result
therefrom. She cautioned that the county does not have authority to
deal with "immigration"; however, when it comes to zoning ordinances,
her office was very much concerned with such violations and would try
to assist our Association and individuals in identifying violations.
Office Tom Black of the Fairfax Police Department (McLean District, of
which Greenway Downs is a part) then provided a report on crime
statistics for our area, noting that it continues to be very important
for citizens to call in suspicious persons or incidents that are seen
in the community. Members of the Association will find the non-
emergency telephone number (second page of the recently published
Greenway Downs Neighborhood Directory) to call with such reports.
The last item on the agenda for the meeting was a report from the
Association's Quality of Life Committee, chaired by Paul K. Hart. In
this report, emphasis was given to reporting violations within our
neighborhood and how the County will not reveal the name of a caller
making a complaint. Should the circumstance result in a criminal
charge, which rarely happens, the complaining party's name may be
revealed in court. County Supervisor Linda Smyth has stated that any
resident may call her office with a complaint, and she would file the
complaint with the County, thereby removing the possibility of a
resident's name being revealed.
The meeting adjourned at 9PM with a general appreciation for all of
the guests who provided information to our membership.
