Installing clojure-mode in Gnu Emacs 24.3.1 on Ubuntu 14.04

I found some really old info about how to install clojure-mode in emacs:

So I thought I'd provide exactly what I did as best I remember it, because it took me over an hour of making mistakes and reading to get it done.  I am NOT an expert.  This is strictly an, "It worked for me" posting.  I haven't tested my install a lot, but at least I have some kind of highlighting and indentation working.

1. Install Leiningen

git clone https://github.com/technomancy/leiningen.git
cd leiningen
git checkout stable
cd bin
./lein

2. Install MELPA

Instructions (sort of) are here if the page will load.
http://melpa-stable.milkbox.net/

Basically, you want to add the following to your ~/.emacs file (or .init.el or whatever you call it):

(require 'package)
(add-to-list 'package-archives
  '("melpa" . "http://melpa.milkbox.net/packages/") t)


For that to take effect, you must restart emacs (or reload your init file), then:

M-x package-refresh-contents


3. Install cider

If you never installed nrepl or slime, it should just be:
M-x package-install cider
