Among classical Muslim authors, the notion of love was developed along three conceptual lines, oftentimes conceived in an ascending hierarchical order: natural love, intellectual love and divine love.[1] The growth of affection (mawadda) into passionate love (ishq) received its most probing and realistic analysis in The Ring of the Dove by the Andalusian scholar Ibn Hazm.[1]

The term ishq is used extensively in Sufi poetry and literature to describe a "selfless and burning love" for Allah. It is the core concept in the doctrine of Islamic mysticism as is key to the connection between man and God. Ishq itself is sometimes held to have been the basis of "creation". The term ishq is widely used in the sacred text of Sikhism.

Some scholars objected to the use of the term 'ishq' due to its association with sensual love but despite the linguistic, cultural or technical meanings, Sufis believe that 'ishq' can only be associated to the Divine.[3]

The word ishq referred to traditional ghazals and Indo-Persian literary culture[4] and has made its way to many other languages which were influenced by Sufism. Some of the most notable languages which have this word are Persian, Hindi, Urdu, Pashto, Arabic, Sindhi, Saraiki: عشق, Turkish: aşk, Azerbaijani: eşq, Bengali: এশ্ক, romanized: eshk and Punjabi: ਇਸ਼ਕ.

In Turkish, Aşk is commonly used to express love, passion or adoration. The Turkish version replaces the 'q' with a 'k', as Turkish lacks voiceless uvular plosive, and the letter 'ş' with the cedilla denotes the "sh" sound, /ʃ/. In comparison with Arabic or Urdu, (like Persian) the word is less restrictive and can be applied to many forms of love, or simply romance. It is common in the lyrics of Turkish songs.

Ishq is used in the Hindi-language, especially in Bollywood movies (Hindi cinema), which often use formal, flowery and poetic Urdu loanwords derived from Persian. The more colloquial Hindi word for love is pyar. In Hindi, ʻIshq' (इश्क़) means lustless love.[6] In Arabic, it is a noun. However, in Hindi-Urdu it is used as both verb and noun.

Ishq-e Majāzi (Persian: عشق مجازی) literally means "metaphorical love". It refers to the love for God's creation i.e. love of a man for a woman or another man and vice versa. It is said to be generated by beloved person's external beauty but since it is connected to lust, it is against the law and considered unlawful. Hence, in Faqr, the term Ishq-e-Majazi is directed only towards Ishq-e-Murshid.[7] This love for one's Murshid eventually leads to love for Muhammad and eventually for God, upon which one that understands Ishq-e-Haqeeqi is in fact the source of all 'metaphorical love'.

Ishq-e Rasūl (Persian: عشق رسول) means "love of Muhammad," an important part of being a Muslim. In Sufism, however, the Ishq-e-Majazi changes its form to Ishq-e-Rasool through the development of an intense feeling of Ishq for Muhammad. Every existent form of creation is in fact the slave of the Creator (in the sense of being subject to His will). Since Muhammad is the most beloved to Allah, the true Lover feels Ishq-e-Rasool till "the Prophet becomes dearer to him than his life, wives, children, house, business and everything else". (Sahih Bukhari and Muslim)[8]

Ishq-e Haqīqi (Persian: عشق حقیقی) literally means "the real love" i.e. "the love of God". It refers to the belief that only God is worth loving and He is the only one who can return His creature's love for Him.[9]The inner subtlety whose locus is the heart is felt by the true seeker of God only. According to this view, this is what differences man from beast because even beasts have senses, whereas inner sight is characteristic of humans.

What does the word Ishq (عشق) mean? Is it permissible to use this word (عشق) for God and His Messenger? Is it permissible to use this word (عشق) for our father, mother, brother, sister, daughter etc.? Is it lawful to say I have Ishq (عشق) with my sister? Jazaak ALLAHU Khair.

Ishq itself is supposed to be only lustless love : the Love of Man for God,divine love. But as with all things the word was adopted by other languages and started getting used as obsessive or passionate love for a Beloved other than the Divine.

I start this small article with a quote from Rumi, the spiritual master whose quotes were themed on love. My best friend, soul mate and the embodiment of love left her body this week after losing a 2 year sparring match with cancer.

This loss has left a gaping hole in my being, with a pain so acute that no medicine will help fill this hole. I hear the words be strong, be brave and a multitude of phrases of the English language from very well meaning friends and relatives but none of this makes any sense to me. What is the meaning of these words when one's soul has been plucked from within? How does one find solace when these words ring hollow?

Netra was this beautiful being who's sole purpose in this short life was to uplift people and make them understand the meaning of love. I was so in admiration of this angel who took me under her wing to mould me into a better human being than when she found me 24 years back. I watched in complete awe at the way she dealt with others. Even if she was angry with someone, her scolding sounded more like the gentle admonition from a loving parent. Her EQ was so high and in tune with her surroundings. She believed in the oneness of all beings and the spiritual person that she was helped her fight the good fight with complete equanimity and equipoise.

I am told that the word Ishq is a greatest expression of love. Netra and I had a bond that was deeper than any word in any language. It was a feeling that transcended language, cultures, boundaries or any other such man made edifices. To me, it was the ultimate expression of a single soul.

I write this article to celebrate the being that was Netra. A divine soul that put her passion, clarity of thought, her divinity and love into everything she touched. I write this article as a catharsis to this feeling inside me that gnaws at me from inside out. The pain of such a parting cannot be described even by great writers like Shakespeare, Dickens or Hemingway.

If there is one overarching theme that results from this life altering episode, it is that love everything you do and have no regrets. Live life at the moment. We live for a future that does not exist. The power is in the NOW.

اس پر تحقیق کی ضرورت ہوگی کہ پہلی بار کس نے عشق کا لفظ اختیار کیا البتہ آپ نے جو حوالہ دیا وہ شاعرانہ بات ہے شاعری میں مبالغہ شاعری کا حسن ہوتا ہے اسے حقیقی معنی میں نہیں لینا چاہیے کوئی حقیقی معنی میں لے گا تو اسے غلط ہی سمجھا جائے گا

Ishq ka lafz kisi deeni maaghiz main istemal nhi hua balkay uskai muqablay main mohobbat kai lafz ko tarjih di gae hai jis main insan aqli faislay kai tor pai kisi cheez ko apnay azeeztar rakhta hai (Quran 9:24, Quran 2:165). Lafz-e-Ishq ka istemal deeni maamlat main yaqeenan mubalgha hai, aur behtar toh yahi hai kai is sai bacha jaye, laikin agre koe istemal karta bh hai toh zayada sai zayada tawajjo dilaye jaa sakti hai, koe hukam nhi lagaya jaa sakta.

Agar lafz-e-ishq ka istemal mujarrad kisi shaks kai liya hoo raha hai toh us par bh koe hukam nhi lagaya jaa sakta. Agar lafz-e-ishq ka istemal khuda kai muqablay main kisi cheez ko zayada azeeztar kar kai kiya jaa raha hai, toh woh shirkiya rawaiya kehlaye ga, aur agar lafz-e-ishq ka istemal khuda kai muqablay main kisi aur kai liya bator mabud istemal hoo raha hai ya bator khuda kai khalq-o-amar main sharik kai tor pai, toh woh yaqeenan shirk kehlaye ga.
