Hey folks,

The weather looks pretty nice next weekend, so I was thinking it might be nice to gather in person and discuss ideas for greening up the Davis Square area, both going over the projects in flight and hopefully getting ideas for new ones.

For those interested in meeting in person and around next weekend, please feel free to note the times you can make here:

As long as a couple of people indicate interest I'll pick a time that works best and send it out mid next week.  For those who can't make it up I'll aim to take notes and send out a summary.  Or if you catch me* at the bikeway garden some time (I'm there probably 5-10 hours a week) feel free to ask me in person.

best,

Alyssa

OK, looks like Saturday at 2 works best for the most people.  Since the weather looks nice I'd love to meet outside.  Unless folks object, let's meet up at the Somerville Community Path near willow ave (https://maps.app.goo.gl/DWkymoi6Kew5sgyF6) right next to the Great Red  Heron.  If you haven't seen it it's a 4-5 foot tall red sculpture - pretty hard to miss!  I'll bring some picnic blankets so we can sit down by the (as far as I know guerrilla) garden there, and chat about that and other spots we can hopefully beautify.

Hope to see many of you there!

Alyssa

Hey folks,

Just a reminder, we're still planning on meeting on the bike path near willow at 2.  Looking forward to seeing folks there!

Hey folks,

I'm so pleased so many people managed to make today's meet up!  I got a bunch of great ideas to follow up on, many included haphazardly below.

  • Someone brought up LuRC, the League of Urban Canners.  I don't recall much canning recently but I did just do a fantastic grape pruning workshop advertised there so it can be a fun list to be on (link here if you want to sign up)
  • I mentioned that I'm trying to lobby for the Morrison Ave project to get its green space back.  The latest project update and contact information for the design team is here.  I'll definitely call out when they schedule a meeting so folks can show up and lobby for it, but if you want to drop the planners a line I suspect it'd be helpful!
  • Loved the idea to add planters in Statue Park (the space in front of Mike's) and love even more that it sounds like the city (Maybe this Louisa?) is already working on making that happen.  I'm happy to check out the New Republic patios which were also mentioned and see if they might accommodate fun container gardens unless someone else wants to chat with them.
  • We talked about the DSNC Elmway Comittee trying to incorporate planters in their quick build plan, which would be cool to get involved with if it moves forward - Z will hopefully keep us in the loop and I'm happy to forward info about the upcoming pizza party if folks who aren't on the DSNC list want to show up and get more information about the project overall or the green opportunities
  • I'm definitely working towards one of the other ideas brought up, better labeling area plants. I'm prototyping this for the West Branch and Bikeway gardens and once I have a good system for easily doing labels we could extend this anywhere we think it'd be educational.  Please keep your eyes out for other areas that would benefit!
  • I like the idea of setting it up so folks can get native plants at bulk order prices, by having lager "guaranteed" orders.  That's definitely something to talk to growers about if the container garden project gets approval and we can start getting plants for it.
  • I reeeeally like the idea of helping people do tree pit gardens.  Matthias offered to dig into researching suitable plants, and I think it'd be fun to have a meet up where we wander around planting seeds, and/or give seed packets and information away to folks in the area.  I think buying in bulk and making smaller seed library packets would make this even more economical than the container garden project so I'm eager to help make it happen!
I've got a bunch of other things I'm planning on doing after the conversation - poking around somesites, finding the water feature in powderhouse etc, but I think the above is enough to think about for now :-)

best,

Alyssa

For folks who aren't on the main DSNC mailing list, the Elm St. Safety Improvement Open House is confirmed for Wednesday, April 22nd from 6-8 PM at Dragon Pizza's Dragon's Lair!  If it is OK with you, I would love to have a flyer there to promote the Greening Davis group and/or Somerville Garden Club as supporters of planters on Elm St.!

Best regards,
Zachary Yaro

A flier sounds good to me (though I unfortunately have a conflict and likely can't make the gathering myself).  Anyone feel artistically inclined or should I throw something together?
Best
