All,

I wanted to let everyone know that contracts will be out beginning on 7/25 for the basketball court installation. I have gone out this morning and marked out what I, personally, think would be the best place for the court to be placed, giving consideration to overall space, shade, and consideration of proximity to the abutting home and property lines.

If anyone wishes to check out the markers between now and 7/25, please do so, and if you have any comments/concerns/suggestions, please send them my way.

Sincerely,

-jason

All,

Jason had a chance to check out the locations of the stakes you put down. I have few suggestions.  I think the diagonal positioning makes sense with the way you set it up but I think it is a little too close to the woods. The hill drops off in the back  and  depending on the age of the child could be very dangerous if they chase a ball down there .  I think the best way to Set it up is have it straight with the hoop opposite of the playground and length go with the land . Use the stake all the way to the left as your line and swing the one on the center to align with it.  This leaves about 10 feet clearance to the woods on the left and ten feet to the house on the right.  If you want me to draw it out or restake let me know.

Thanks
Andrew

Jason,

We do not agree that this would be the best location for the court.  Its as close as you can get to our property line and right against the kids gym.  The age of children who play on that gym enjoy the grass.  If  placed on the side when you first enter the park to the left (Bedford side)  that leaves enough area for the kids to play without being on the tar and for us not to have to hear the ball bouncing against our bedroom windows.

If your looking for shade I am not sure why you did not consider the common lane across the street from the park.  That lot is very flat and has much more shade. We could transplant the 2 trees to the park.

Also, we have not heard back about what the insurance company said about covering the court or the projected maintenance cost for keeping the court maintained.

Thank you,

Louis and Michelle

All,

I had received a few comments/suggestions regarding placement of the basketball court and have moved the stakes to try and address concerns over the basketball court being too close to wooded areas in the playground. One additional suggestion was to relocate the entire court across the street to the even side of the HOA. After evaluating that space today I was unable to find adequate space that did not run into the sloping nature of the current layout (which could be addressed) but was also set back far enough from 20 Grapevine, the back wooded areas and the street (which in my opinion was most concerning because any dimensions I tried to fit, even with relocating trees, etc were still within 10-15 feet of the street).

Given that the placement of the court within the larger field will directly impact those nearest to the park I am going to recommend that upon final placement of the court a formal curfew be established for playground use between 8 AM and 8 PM and any use prior/after will result in fines to be established by the HOA board.

Also, I personally will not be in town during the installation of the court, I am asking anyone with further comments/suggestions please use the "reply all" function as I have copied all board members on this email.

Sincerely,

-jason

HI Jason.
THanks for doing a great job with all of the email updates.  I have one question about the new placement.  Which way will the hoop/net be facing. My thought would be to have the hoop face the street only to avoid a flying ball hitting a small child on the swing set.  I also like the idea of the 8-8 rule especially for the abutters.

Thanks again,
Sue LeBoeuf

All,

This is the last email today, I promise, about the basketball court. However, I wanted to let everyone know that Louis Tremblay has taken the time to go out and mark up an area of the playground to provide a better, visual, representation, of a court location that would maximize the available playground space/grass areas; thanks Louis for this. Also, Larry has found that the town has a statute, 142-2, that states town park curfews are 30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sundown, which would make sense for this area as well. Please check out the park and let us know your thoughts.

Jason,
Thank you for putting so much time into this. I can see that it does maximize the space but I think the new location is too close to the road and could have an impact on the look of the neighborhood. One suggestion I'd like to make is to move the swing set closer to the road and away from the court (or somewhere else) and put the court where the swing set is now, with the hoop either against the woods or 90 degrees to that against the Bedford line. Not sure what the objection is about being close to the woods. If people are worried about the ball rolling into the woods, a short fence could stop that.

I also attached a pdf map of the neighborhood in case it may be useful.

Ron

Ron,

I agree that Louis lines are very close to the road, much closer than I would prefer. When he went about setting this up today said he'd be using a 20 foot set-back, which I think is still too close to the road after seeing his set up. My wife also thought moving the playground and swapping the court out for that location would be the best approach, and she informed me just know that "great minds think alike".

What are everyone else's thoughts? We would have to relocate things ourselves, and this would likely delay installation for awhile, which I am personally fine with. I would rather get this done to everyone's satisfaction rather than quickly only to have issues within the neighborhood later.

All,

I have heard back from the paving company and they have no problem moving our install date back a few weeks. Also, Scott said he was ok with whatever makes the most sense. Thus, unless anyone objects I would like to send out an email to the HOA with Ron's suggestion and a call for volunteers to move the playground on a weekend we (the board) finalize. I personally can't commit to this weekend but could the following (either 7/30 or 7/31) with a statement that says if no one shows up to move the equipment the court will be placed in a location to be determined by the paving company that makes best use of all available space, as I don't want this to become a protracted issue.

Please let me know your thoughts.

I like the idea and agree with it. I'm not around any weekends at all coming up unfortunately. Between trips and the fact that I work weekends it's tough. I could help move it during the evening this coming Thursday if anyone else is around. I should be around by 6. Leaving Friday for a trip till Sunday and work Sunday night.
